    Press Release: Booker signs with Iowa State

    AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State men’s basketball team improved its depth in the post with the addition of Southern Illinois transfer Anthony Booker, a 6-8, 230-pound forward who averaged 6.4 points and 4.1 rebounds as a sophomore for the Salukis last season. Booker signed a financial aid agreement to attend Iowa State University next year.

    A native of Florissant, Mo., Booker will sit out next season and have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in the 2011-12 campaign.

    “Anthony brings immediate size, strength and most of all experience to our front line,” Hoiberg said. “A year sitting out will really help the overall development of his game and we are looking forward to watching Anthony make an immediate impact the following season.”

    Booker started six games, recorded two double-doubles and ranked fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference in blocked shots at 1.0 bpg in the 2009-10 season. He shot 48.4 percent (77-159 FG) from the field and posted nine double-digit scoring outings to help him make the MVC’s All-Bench team.

    As a freshman, Booker averaged 3.7 points and 3.5 rebounds, registering a career-high 18 points vs. Indiana State.

    Booker came to SIU as one of the top recruits in the school’s history, rating No. 43 on the final Rivals150 rankings for the class of 2008. He helped lead his McCluer North High School team to the 2007 Missouri 5A state title and a runner-up finish in 2008.

    I think thats going to be a blessing, lets face it next year is going to be a question mark either way (lots of ?'s with personel and an unproven staff). With this kid and Babb it'll be like bringing in 2 solid players with not only game time experience but 2 players who get another year to mature and grow in our system.

    yet he failed to make much of an impact in a mid major league? The Big 12 will be a huge step up. If he can't dominate in he MVC, how is he going to do in the Big 12? Hopefully he just did not fit the system and will flourish in FH's system. That is what I hope anyway. One thing is for sure, our recruiting has to pick up because the Big 12 is the toughest league in the land.

    SIU is no slouch, and it sounds like he made an impact, even if it wasn't in terms of double digit scoring and rebounding averages. I'd think we would take a top 50 player at any point and be pleased with that. But I guess "we" might not mean "you".

    Ok, I've been skeptical of FH...but hiring Lutz and getting another solid transfer this week, I'm starting to get excited about what can be done. It is starting to feel like a real good fit. However, how is next season shaping up?

    I find the fact that we are signing a number (3 so far if I recall correctly) of transfers to be very interesting.

    My sense is that FH is trying to get the program back up on its legs ASAP...which I think is imperative...we don't need some 4 year plan...we need to win ASAP.

    Of course, with a transfer having to sit out a year, that likely means year two before they have impact. However, having them with the team will allow us to have better practices for certain.



    I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

    I think having the two transfers in the program are going to allow it to appear like we take a big step forward between years 1-2. It also let's us re-establish a little bit more even distribution of scholarships between classes. Pretty good plan for Hoiberg to pursue, imo.
