Outside the men's room: Walk-off balk

Hopefully this is the last bit of conference realignment stuff to chew on...I'm exhausted by it. I probably didn't explain the title well enough, but basically, it was a win for ISU in fashion that wasn't all that excited. Not to mention it was a very unique situation.

Any thoughts and comments are welcome.

    I love it. Great article.

I am with you 100%. Our new situation is probably better than we could have hoped for anywhere else.

We get more $$ and even though everyone else does too I think it will make a bigger difference for us than it will for TX and OU etc. We must do more with less and close the competitive gap between ISU and the top of the Big 12.

Re: Outside the men's room: Walk-off balk

If you win, they will come. Very few places does that order find itself reversed on a consistent basis, the Chicago Cubs being the only one I can think of off the top of my head. And that’s a unique situation.
The round robin football schedule is a big deal. Texas and OU aren’t unbeatable. But when was the last time we looked at the schedule and said we had a chance against either of those teams? More times than not it’s a check in the loss column.
Having two teams on the schedule every year which would be considered monumental upsets if we won is a tall order indeed. It’s not a death blow by any stretch, but it makes the margin for error very, very small.

    Just one comment to add…
People like to talk about ISU struggling in years where we have OU and Texas on the schedule and the fact ISU has only made a bowl game one time with that scenario. Okay. What years has ISU had a marginally successful team when they happened to be on the schedule?
For ISU, marginally talented starts in 2000.
2002-Good team that went to a bowl game, and also lost to UConn at home (UT and OU weren’t the problem)
    2003-Complete disaster
2006-Went 4-8(1-7) and could’ve been much, much worse
2007-Again, not good against every other team, let alone UT and OU

OU got quite a scare in Ames in 2007. I can still picture Bell making that interception and refusing to go down easily!

No one outside of ISU and maybe OU remembers that the game that year was close.

Coming close and falling short of an upset is no better to me than getting beat by 4 TD's.

Bottom line is we need a quicker team on the field to compete. Texas and Florida recruits run fast.

Losing by 4 TDs is much more disappointing than 17-7 on TV. Close losses do help prestige more than blowouts. We do not need 70-7 games like nebby experienced a couple of years.
