    ISU FB is improving

Below are the W-L records for all Big 12 opponents and Iowa over the last two decades (1990-1999 and 2000-2009).

What is interesting is that for all teams except for Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas, the records show improvement. And overall, ISU has doubled it winning percentage decade to decade.

And remember, both Texas and Oklahoma were annually in National Champion discussion for the last decade. Also, the most competitive game with Oklahoma was our last game that ended 7-17.

What about the two teams who abandoned ship? ISU shows the most improvement against both of those teams AND Iowa in the last decade.

With the new format for football... Is there a chance we'll play one of the Texas schools here in November? Will we still play Oklahoma and Texas back-to-back?

Probably not only back to back, but on the road each year
I am really wanting to see the south schools have to come north later in the year. I love those 40 degree days when the visiting team is in front of heaters and we are in short sleeves and the fans are in light jackets.

If I'm one of the 5 outcasts, I vote as a block for all south teams to play their away games all November to north teams.

Does this mean that we will double our winning percentage this decade ('10-'19) and average 9 wins per year?

It'd be great to get either UT or OU at home each year.

We are improving in the same way a terminal cancer patient improves if his doctor give him an extra few months to live.

I'm guessing it was lower than that in the 80's so it could have gone done.

I'd be happy to see us with a similar increase over the next decade. If we're sitting here in 10 years at around a 50%, knowing that we're going to have a few really tough years adjusting to the new 9 game conference schedule, and we can go 4-5 or 5-4 in conference each year (some higher some lower), I'd be content with that improvement. 65-70% would be better, but I'll take 50%. It's a long road.

I want to see us become competitive in the conference. I think this new schedule will help us improve. I think our noncon should get progressively more difficult, both during the season and from season to season. Game 1, cupcake, game 2, long john, game 3, bran muffin.

We need the cupcake in game 1 to build confidence right now. But we don't get any better playing cupcakes. We could just play the practice squad all season if we don't care about improving as long as we win.

We need to be a better team. As much as it will suck losing more games each season in the near future, it will make us a better team. It will give us the reality, the context, the firsthand experience, of what it takes to be a nationally competitive team.

This is all assuming that we play 10 more years in the b12 as we see it this morning. We all know what assumptions do. They make us look like idiots.

I, for one, will be stepping up as a fan and donor to do everything in my power to avoid us being caught naked on the roof of a burning building where all the windows are locked and there's nothing to do but jump naked into the crowd gathering below.

    You know, like last week.

    Re: ISU FB is improving

    Seeing:

    1. A&M Meltdown about not going to the SEC
    2. how joyous NU and CU fans are about joining different conferences
    3. How negative about the future ISU fans have been

Suggests to me a few things.

Fans tend to rely upon their past memories of good or bad runs far too heavily and project that into the future.
    1. Fans who had winning records (CU,NU, A&M) project it into the future as an expectation of continued success and when it goes unmet, look for any potential solution.
      • All of these programs have gone through more coaching changes recently than when their expectations were met.
      • All are more invested in thinking the grass will be greener in other conferences - maybe a way to return to past glories.

    2. Fans who had dismal records like ISU tend to expect a poor showing in the future and overlook recent gains.
      • The "we're never going to win again" threads out there.
      • All of the gains are minimized, discounted or ignored when "objectively" reviewing the current state of affairs.

The real irony is that when expectations aren't met in either case, it creates dissonance, or irritation. People don't like to have their opinions or views of things to be challenged. When they are, they get irritable.

The real reason there is so much friction in college football right now is because there is change going on. What is driving it is football players realizing there are better choices for them individually if they look at where they play from a "what do I gain" perspective instead of all starry-eyed "but I'm third string on the team of my dreams" as was the way back when the past was predictably repeated into the future.

Bottom line: The historical have-nots are now seriously considered and are catching up to the traditional haves. If you want to play as a player, it doesn't really matter how much money or other benefits are thrown your way to sit on the bench at your favorite school to root for. And high school kids have figured this out.

The rules are changing and things are about to get really interesting in the foreseeable future. That's how it looks from here anyways.
