Arkansas AD sys no interest in joining big 12

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long says the school has "no interest" in joining another conference amid speculation the Razorbacks could be a candidate to move to the Big 12.
Long said Wednesday that Arkansas is happy in the Southeastern Conference. The Big 12 recently lost Nebraska to the Big Ten and Colorado to the Pac-10, leaving it with 10 members.
Arkansas left the Southwest Conference and joined the SEC in 1991. Some of its old rivals from the Southwest Conference - such as Texas and Texas A&M - now play in the Big 12.

Interesting...why the need to deny anything?

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Nebraska was committed to the Big 12 too...

You should read a thread I started in this forum earlier this afternoon.

Arkansas was probably responding directly to my thread.

Pollard made it explicitly clear Tuesday that the conference is staying at 10. That's where the extra money comes from for duration of existing contracts. Does anyone even pay attention anymore?

A better question is why do any of you believe what is publicly stated is the gospel truth and not subject to change?

Arkansas makes a lot of sense to join the Big 12, but we need to keep our team total to 10 for revenue sharing purposes. I don't see expansion coming anytime soon. (unless ND comes calling)

Why would we want North Dakota?

Anything's up for change of course, and i personally would actually prefer if it went to 12, theres just a lot more out there pointing towards staying at 10 in the near term than for the conference expanding, at least at this point.

Isn't this the Steve Alford approach. They are denying interest when it has been well publicized they weren't an immediate target.

The one thing that I found in sports is that when someone says publicly "XYZ rumor has no merit", there is good chance it does have merit.

Which is only what? Two years on the Fox Sports deal, right? At which point all bets are off because you potentially make more money when renegotiating those rights if you're able to offer a conference championship game in the deal. I think the only thing that is "certain" is that they are staying put until at least one tv deal runs out.

Re: Arkansas AD sys no interest in joining big 12

From the "Where in the Hell Did This Come From?" department comes a statement released by Arkansas this afternoon in which the school commits its unwavering support for SEC membership.

Sure, there have been a few rumors here or there that the Razorbacks might be a candidate to move to the Big 12, but nothing we've seen that's had much of any real substance to it. For the love of Stephen Garcia, one source of the rumors was South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier, and that was way back in late April.

Still, nearly two months after the rumors had all but died out and been shot down once, the Razorbacks felt strongly enough to release a statement because well, they can, we guess. Here's the statement from the school:

"In recent weeks and months there has been much national dialogue regarding conference affiliation in intercollegiate athletics. In the course of that dialogue some have suggested that the University of Arkansas was an institution that may be pursued by other conferences. From the beginning, we have been very clear that the University of Arkansas is a proud member of the Southeastern Conference and has no interest in joining another conference. Chancellor Gearhart has been unwavering in his support of our institution's continued membership in the SEC. Recent events have not in any way altered our commitment or desire to remain a member of what we believe is the strongest conference in the nation."

Honestly, who would willingly leave the SEC and the piles of money each member school sleeps on every single night?

Then again, Jerry Jones is a former football player and alum of the school...
