Chip Brown on CU/NU buyout money

I'm listening to Chip Brown's radio show right now.

He just mentioned that Texas "turned down" the buyout money that ISU, KU, KSU, MU and BU were going to give the big three. Also said that Oklahoma & A&M might do the same.

    Nice gesture if true.

CU may be saying they cannot fly to games this fall without it and Nebby may be saying see you in court. It may be a million to fight the court battle.

If you take the money, you may have to sign another agreement paper.

Who knows - if BOTC is to be believed, A&M is "misunderstood" and probably didn't even know they were in line for buyout money, and OU's just happy not to be in a conference filled with Trojans. I guess anything's possible...

I think the big three should refuse the money. First off they don't need it * with this new deal (almost) in place and second, it makes them look like even bigger greedy pigs than they already are perceived to be.

    * Okay, A&M could use it, but still is making out like a bandit.

Re: Chip Brown on CU/NU buyout money

Here is the kicker though. I did listen to the press conference of Dan Beebe along with the press conference of Jamie Pollard and Dr. Geoffroy. The Fox contract expires at the end of the 2010-2011 school year. The ESPN/ABC contract expires at the end of the 2015-2016 school year. The Big XII caught a huge break because ESPN/ABC is not going to pay the Big XII less even though two conference schools will not be there between 2011-2016. The Nebraska and Colorado portion of that ESPN/ABC TV money that would have gone to Iowa State, Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, and Missouri (5-school chunk) will go to Texas, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma. Oklahoma State and Texas Tech will be able to keep their share of the ESPN/ABC Nebraska and Colorado money.

All that being said, I am still in favor of the deal we cut.

Re: Chip Brown on CU/NU buyout money

I just have a bad feeling that NU and CU will really want to get the money that will be witheld. In the end of the day, the money could be very insignificant after the lawyers' fees, etc.
But nice gesture by Texas, if it's true and if the other big schools do the same, it'll be great !

I listened to both as well, they only get a portion of that beyond their normal share and that kicks in only if the revenue they are getting is less than their offers from the other conferences. Jamie specifically said any of these $that went to the three would be small/insignificant portion of the nu/cu shares and may not be any at all. That is why there is an immediate financial benefit for ISU

Great post. This is all true. Basically it also comes down to this. Iowa State, Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, and Missouri (and Dan Beebe) came up with a plan to guarantee Texas, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma that they would receive at least the minimum of what they would have received if they jumped conferences even if it means giving them a certain portion of their Nebraska/Colorado ESPN/ABC money or the Nebraska/Colorado exit fees. Basically, Texas, Oklahoma, and A&M are the only three schools with guaranteed money. All that being said, great deal for all involved (except maybe Texas Tech and Oklahoma State).

I'm sorry. Let me clarify. It is true if and only if Texas, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma do not get to the minimum threshold of the money they would have received if they jumped conferences. Remember -- at this stage this is also just a "Gentlemens Agreement."

If C-Swift is right, that's a pretty nice gesture.

It was explicitly said that ALL Conference rules concerning the division of TV revenue would remain.

Now it sounds like Texas will take just their normal cut. And the others might follow suit.

I also heard that ESPN was planning on moving up their negotiations one year on the TV contract.

It is not necessarily a "nice gesture." Remember, Texas, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma are the only three schools with guaranteed money. The deal that was cut is that ISU, K-State, KU, Baylor, and Missouri will give them enough of their Nebraska/CU ESPN/ABC money and/or exit fees to make them whole. Texas has done nothing throughout this whole process but act in their own best self interests. There is nothing wrong with that but they did not "give" us anything.
