Football Record in New Big 12

By using 2012 as template, let's guess. On Will be chart, changes are bold. ISU's all time football record is 487-583-46 or 45.5% winning record all time. I've added the Win/Loss record and percentage to the right of each game in the reconfigured Big 12 schedule for guidance.

The bottom line has not changed: ISU needs to continuously improve as Coach Rhoads is preaching. Without that, does it really matter who we play in the Big 12? The stats say NO!

    Schedule Was
Sat, Sep 01 Tulsa Ames, Iowa
Sat, Sep 08 Iowa at Iowa City, Iowa
Sat, Sep 15 Western Illinois Ames, Iowa
Sat, Sep 22 Western Kentucky (Family Weekend) Ames, Iowa
Sat, Sep 29 Texas A&M * Ames, Iowa
Sat, Oct 06 Kansas (Homecoming) * Ames, Iowa
Sat, Oct 13 Baylor * at Waco, Texas
    Sat, Oct 20 Nebraska * Ames, Iowa 17-85-2 17.3%
Sat, Oct 27 Kansas State * at Manhattan, Kan.
Sat, Nov 03 Oklahoma State * at Stillwater, Okla.
Sat, Nov 10 Colorado * at Boulder, Colo. 15-48-1 24.2%
Sat, Nov 17 Missouri * Ames, Iowa

    Schedule will be
Sat, Sep 01 Tulsa Ames, Iowa 1-0 100%
Sat, Sep 08 Iowa at Iowa City, Iowa 19-38 33.3%
Sat, Sep 15 Western Illinois Ames, Iowa Never Met
Sat, Sep 22 Texas (Family Weekend) Ames, Iowa 0-7 0%
    Sat, Sep 29 Texas A&M * Ames, Iowa 1-9 10%
Sat, Oct 06 Kansas (Homecoming) * Ames, Iowa 34-49-6 41.6%
Sat, Oct 13 Baylor * at Waco, Texas 5-4 55.5%
    Sat, Oct 20 Oklahoma * Ames, Iowa 5-67-2 8.1%
Sat, Oct 27 Kansas State * at Manhattan, Kan. 49-40-4 54.8%
Sat, Nov 03 Oklahoma State * at Stillwater, Okla. 17-25-3 41.1%
Sat, Nov 10 Texas Tech * at Tech 1-7 12.5%
    Sat, Nov 17 Missouri * Ames, Iowa 34-59-9 37.7%

So based on historical averages, we can expect to win 2-3 games. Until ISU changes, does it really matter who we play? I would sure like to see all of those averages rise.

    OK, now tell me W-L.

Re: Football Record in New Big 12

I think your post represents why we are where we are and a couple years of winning really doesn't change that - of the 5 that appeared be left out - Missouri reportedly has the best chance to land somewhere else based on their population base, Kansas has a national basketball program and appeared to be outside looking in, Kansas State had a respectable run in football and recently in basketball and was often mentioned in the same breath as ISU. We can't change who we are or where we live, winning would be nice but lets not mortgage our future in a conference that is stacked against our success. One of the things that has been exciting about being an ISU fan is getting that unexpected win, A&M at College Station, Nebraska in 92 and last year, Iowa in 98, etc. All of these wins trump any bowl berth or win we have had. Playing in the conference allows for these moments but lets not kid ourseleves that we will be consistently competitive with the big boys the way the game is being played now. You can all call me out for having a loser mentality, but lets be realistic about where we stand (same as before with no promises of a future?) and use that time wisely to rebuild the sports we can be competitive in year in and year out no matter what conference we may be a part of 5 years from now.

That record against Oklahoma has to be one of the worst between two teams that have met 74 times. Five wins.

Re: Football Record in New Big 12

I can see 6-6 without a lot of difficulty. Those are historical averages. And while that's great for determining how good a program is historically, it does little to predict a more focused outcome, such as a single game. For example, Minnesota leads the all-time series with Iowa (by quite a wide margin, in fact), but they are hardly mentioned in the same breath as Iowa right now.

I see Tulsa and W. Illinois as likely wins. Baylor may be without QB Robert Griffin by then, and he's why Baylor doesn't look THAT bad right now. So chalk up another W. K-State is WAY down right now, and I don't see them getting a whole lot better anytime soon. Another W. Mizzou is a beatable team too, I've not been impressed with them (even when they had Daniel and Maclin). Kansas could be winnable, but I can't say for sure since we need to see a little of what Gill can do there. And A&M has been a hot and cold team for some time now. And there won't be Jerrod Johnson in College Station by then, either. So that's a toss up. If OSU or TTU were home games, I'd give you a chance. But Stillwater is no fun place to play. Iowa may even be down from this high by 2012 (boy, wouldn't that quell fears of Armageddon for Hawk fans?)

So the worst (realistically) that I see is 4-8, the best being 8-4. I think 6-6 or 7-5 is a realistic expectation.

Re: Football Record in New Big 12

I really hope they restructure the schedule when they redo them. Having to play both Oklahoma and Texas in the same year is one thing but playing them in back to back weeks on the road? Good luck with that one, for anyone, not just us.

I would really like to see the Big XII split them up for us. Play one at home and one on the road every year and not back to back weeks. Much more manageable.

They havent officially said we will play a 9 game conference schedule. I really hope we dont. We need all the wins we can get.

Agreed. I think 8 would be optimal. Yeah, you miss one a year, but we've been missing 3 a year since the beginning of the conference. Our conference schedule is getting more difficult no matter what, no need to compound it by losing one of your non-conference games.

There's a website that tracks all of this called Football Data Warehouse.

    Iowa State Historical Data

If you mean 2012's schedule, it's on the ISU website www.cyclones.com

If you mean "To BE" schedule, I guessed.

In other words, basically where ISU is now, but with a theoretical stronger schedule annually from now.

The best record ISU ever had was the 9 win season in 2000 and the first Insight Bowl win. So everyone is getting overly excited about not much when it comes to scheduling.

I don't really like the idea of using history to predict future. I mean, sure, we have been terrible, but so have a lot of teams that have improved.

I thought about coming up with W/L records for the last decade, but that required too much effort....besides, you don't like statistics.

What are you doing at ISU if you don't like statistics?
