2001 NCAA tourney exit from Shirley

    This is from his chat:

Jason (Des Moines, IA): Every year in March for the past 5 years, we've been subjected to dramatic montages that invariably show a clip of that Hampton coach taking part in one of the most awkward victory celebrations recorded this side of the Special Olympics. It's desensitized some of us Cyclone fans to the point that we're finally willing to talk about that fateful day. I think you should be the one to finally clear the air and explain to us: WHY??

Paul Shirley: (4:00 PM ET ) He's referring to our becoming the 4th number 2 seed to ever lose in the first round....Honestly, most of my teammates didn't care anymore. It was sad to see--I had looked forward to such a moment all my life. I was a starter on a top 10 college basketball team in the NCAA tournament. But some of us were ready to move on. It was one of the most disappointing times of my life.

Paul Shirley: (4:00 PM ET ) And now I will hang myself.

Always kind of assumed it, but it still pisses me off.

Kinda just goes to show how little fun it was to play for Larry...

He did say 'most' of his teammates... This isn't the first time I had heard this before either... Larry had those guys absolutely exhausted by the time the tournament rolled around...

Re: 2001 NCAA tourney exit from Shirley

Here's another ISU tidbit from his chat:

kevin - denver, co: What were girls like at ISU? I can't imagine much, right? Gimme one reason to go to ISU over KU or CU...

Paul Shirley: (4:30 PM ET ) Well, if you play basketball there, the fans are great. Other than that, I've got nothing.

Man, i dont care what people say. There are some beautiful women at ISU. Screw the morons who say otherwise.

Re: 2001 NCAA tourney exit from Shirley

What does everyone think of Shirley? I liked him when he was here and I think he's funny, but I'm not crazy about the way he always puts down Iowa State when it's brought up. I guess you could say "At least he's honest," but I still don't like it.

I think he says stuff like that to get a laugh. There are a few who leave here that tend to act like ISU wasnt good enough for them.

Yeah the guys where exhausted the year before when they won the Big 12 tourney and then went to the Elite 8!

Fact is that Tinsley didn't care anymore and the effort was less the impressive.

Well, if some of the players didn't care it makes it easier for me not to as well.

Tinsley strikes me as the kind of guy who would like money. And leading his team back to the Elite 8 would have made him a lot more.

Re: 2001 NCAA tourney exit from Shirley

It was a different year, more pressure, less talent and the coaches really grinded... I was friends with most of the guys and they said it was like a totally different coaching staff that year... I actually had the misfortune of witnessing a practice that year, it was nuts...

As for Paul, I like Paul... He came to alot of baseball games the years I was there and normally sat right by my parents... I don't think what he says is about ISU is all that different from what alot of people that have had the chance to travel around and see different places would say...

As for the girls, yes there is some talent, but the volume is very low...

That Hampton loss is still painful, but it's time to put it away.

As for Shirley, I think it's kind of cool that he's acheived fame in this round-about way, but to be honest, while he can be funny, he also strikes me as being full of himself, kind of a *****, frankly.
