Calling all Armchair ADs and University Presidents

So, I get tired of people second guessing every move that is made by our university.

I understand that people aren't and shouldn't be happy about what has taken place in the last hour. Iowa State gets a harder schedule, the same relative amount of money and loses respect in the conference. It is clear now that ISU, KU, KSU, MU and BU (and in a way OSU and TT) all feel very dependent on OU, aTm and UT (I still don't get why aTm should be included in this list but they are).

Here is my opinion. If there was another offer from a conference for remaining schools we wouldn't be in this position. Did MU and KU decide that they would rather stay with their Big 8 cousins instead of leave when the PAC 10 and SEC supposedly came calling? Was there ever really any interest from the Big East?

    We don't know right now.

But here is what I want to know. With the information that we know, what would you have done if you were leading ISU? Remember that you have an entire University that prides itself on its academics and research to maintain as well as an athletic department that would definitely take a major hit in funding if we were to go to a non-bcs conference.

    So lets here the proposals...

If that Big East deal is true, I would have taken it in a heartbeat.

    Good gravy people.

Well, since it's always been one of my biggest desires to be an armchair AD or president of Iowa State...

I would have tried to remain calm, read the tea leaves, and see if there was the possibility out there for us and the other "forgotten 5" members to jump to another league. Call my AD buddy at West Virginia and talk about the kids, with a little question about whether he likes Ames in November. Send Paul Rhoads back to Pitt to visit old friends and snoop around. Something covert. If I found out my options were MWC, C-USA, or selling our souls to Texas, I would probably sell my soul, temporarily, for the money. But if I thought there was any chance of getting in another BCS-level conference, I would have been working the back-channels just like Texas and A&M, and I would have been gone given what we had to agree to now.

This leads me to think that despite the rumors, the Big East must have not been interested in us, which is very unfortunate. I think that move could have been mutually beneficial in many ways.

My first ISU basketball game - Fred Hoiberg was on the court.
My first ISU football game - Paul Rhoads was on the sidelines.
But they hadn't yet reached their full potential.

No reputable news source ever ran with the story about the Big east. Wouldn't you think that that would make major headlines at Fox, ESPN, Sports Illustrated?

They probably called their contacts and discovered the truth...

Maybe no one cared about Iowa State and Kansas State enough to want to write about this deal or the possibility of it.

    Pretty much my assessment.

If I were "in charge," my plan would be:
    1. Hope the Big 12 holds together (and buy at least a little time)
    2. Explore every option available that would retain BCS status and have a feasible backup plan ready to go if (1) doesn't happen.

Choice 1 is already under way

Choice 2, we can assume is happening, but we can only guess.

You don't think that KU going to a basketball conference like the Big East wouldn't be at least low level news. I know that this is all about football but really. The basketball aspect of that rumor would've been huge!!!

There were no other offers made to ISU.

Someone please show me one bona-fide legit offer. Not just speculation.

No because you are unwilling to except the fact that ISU had no other viable options but to stay put with the Big 12 even given the conditions seemingly dictated by Texas. ISU had no other options. Get over it already. ISU is in the Big 12 with Texas calling the shots.

How is someone supposed to 'show' you an offer? You find out about these offers when the deal is completely done. You're not gonna see a copy of the pac-10 offer to the south schools, nor are you going to see the SEC offer to TAMU.

ISU and the other 4 had a contingency plan.

Youíre the one saying that ISU had all these other offers and should have taken one of them instead of remaining in the Big 12. I certainly didnít bring up the subject of offers Ė you did. So now you are saying that you know the offers exist.

Funny how you are so adamant that the offers to ISU from other conferences exist but canít show any proof to support your contention. But yet in the end ISU,GG and JP decided to stay put with the Big 12. Why is that, if all these other supposedly great offers in fact existed.
