Reviews on Paul Shirley's new book...

Have come across a couple of positive mentions around the internet of [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Can-Keep-Jersey-Countries-Basketball/dp/034549136X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-4334923-4194529?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1179412837&sr=8-1"]Paul's new book [/ame]that came out his week.

An AP story from the SFGAte.com
A mention on ESPN.com's TrueHoop blog
And a email exchange between Paul and Neal Pollack on Slate.com

I must say that I'm looking forward to reading it and hopefully enjoying it as much as his ESPN column and myspace writings.

There is also an amazon.com link in my first post. As far as buying from a store, I know that Heidi Solliday said on KCCI the other night that she bought it at Barnes and Noble in WDM.

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

Re: Reviews on Paul Shirley's new book...

Paul was on Cotlar this morning, and it was an interesting interview. He talked about his experience at Iowa State, and as talked about before, it wasn't very positive. The main reason that he gave was that he never felt close to his teammates, because he played with 49 different players at Iowa State during his career. He also said that basketball there wasn't very fun. I can understand that to a certain point, but even if it wasn't fun, I was kind of wondering while listening if he appreciated that the lack of fun might have resulted in a basketball career after he left, albeit one that has been erratic. He did improve pretty dramatically by his senior year. Overall a good interview.

Maybe if he would have had more fun he wouldn't have had to worry about playing on a winning team, getting great exposure, and ultimately getting a shot to play in the NBA.

Re: Reviews on Paul Shirley's new book...

I wasn't trying to rip on Paul for his reasoning, but maybe when he gets a little older and has the benefit of perspective, he might feel differently about that. I can see his point about all the different players. 49 is a huge number.

Anyone know where I can get a Shirley jersey? I would love that Greek team one on the cover of his book.

Re: Reviews on Paul Shirley's new book...

I bought the book on the 17th and finished it on the 18th. I simply could not put the book down, it was really interesting. My girlfriend, who had no idea who Shirley was, even started reading it and really enjoying it.I would definetly recommend this read if you have the free time, you can tell he definetly respected Coach Floyd, but alot more at Iowa State than as a nba coach.
