    Column: The greatest day

Here's my column on what went down Monday.

It won't take you long to realize how important I think yesterday's events were.

Great blog and thanks for all of your hard work CW you have put into cyclone fanatics. This site has truly become the one stop shop for Iowa State athletics. I remember thinking during the Nebraska game last year that there was no way that Iowa State was going to win that game because of there terrible luck, but the ball literally did came our way eight times that day. It was unbelievable. Maybe the winds of these Cyclones are a changin' for the better. Regardless, I'm still proud to be a Cyclone.

    Re: Column: The greatest day

Actually, I really didn't read it through the first time.

After reading this again Chris, I think your a little off here.

Paul Clark had a great piece tonight. I suggest everyone take a look.
    http://iowastate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1094291

Iowa State was NEVER going to Conference USA, or the WAC, or ANY conference that was non-BCS. If you really thought they would, then you either A) really need to cure your case of "God is against us/woe is me Cyclone fan/everything bad always happens to Iowa State" itis (which I admittedly need prescription medicine for at times), or B) you were too focused on "opinions" and speculation getting thrown out from people that literally didn't matter. (I like Paul's phrase "reckless speculation and projections by the media")

Today was not going to be armageddon for Iowa State athletics, and I am truly confident that if you have a personal, sit down, truthful conversation with Jamie, he'll tell you the same thing.

Now don't get me wrong, we might have been relegated to the MWC and had significantly reduced revenue, which would have sucked, but we weren't going any lower than that.

With that said Chris, great job keeping us updated with what you were hearing on the situation. We all appreciate what you are doing here at CF. Glad you get be a part of CF while we are in the Big 12 and not the MWC :)

    Re: Column: The greatest day

Most people forget that March 25, 2000 was not just the day one of ISU's best ever MBB teams lost in heartbreaking fashion. It was also the day ISU's best ever WBB team lost in heartbreaking fashion.

2 seed ISU lost by one point to 3 seed Penn State on a PSU putback with maybe 5 seconds left and a missed Megan Taylor jumper at the buzzer. Two days later, PSU beat up on a massively overrated 1 seed LA Tech to make the Final Four, and I'm confident ISU would have done the same. We were a few bounces from having BOTH ISU BB teams in the Final Four.

My wife (fiancee at the time) and I were two of a few thousand people who went to an ISU WBB pregame rally that day and watched the MBB game which was broadcast on some large projection screens. After that loss, we walked over to Municipal to watch the WBB team lose.

    That drive home sucked.

Great article. I was pretty scared about what could happen. I had a hard timing thinking about Iowa State in a different conference.

It just seems like to me that the black cloud has lifted. It used to be that everything bad that could happen to ISU did. Go up on KSU 28-7 at half, lose 35-31. Chance to win the North against average Mizzou and KU teams? Lose both in OT. We have a chance to win in Lincoln in OT and Nick Leaders drops a sure int that would have ended it. NU scores shortly after to win. Iowa gets Alford to skate out of town ahead of the posse and we end up paying WM millions of dollars to leave. GMac endures endless injuries and departures to take once promising teams to sub-.500 records.

Now, we have Auburn PAY us to take away a bad coach. We have Creighton do the same in MBB. ISU gets 8 turnovers to win in Lincoln. And, on the brink of destruction, the Big 12 comes together and every school more than doubles their TV revenue. Things are turning and it's going to be a fun decade.

    Re: Column: The greatest day

Awesome work Chris! In a word... Awesome!
You spoke highly not only of a program, but the people surrounding that program, in the past and present. And when you spoke about the future... there's only one more word I would've added. Unless I missed it, that word is "opportunity" as in, the opportunity to do it again. The beauty of that word is that it is in the future, and it is there, and the moments that surround that word will come!!!
    As ever, GO CYCLONES!!!

Maybe the tides are turning, maybe we have another slug to the midsection coming; I don't know. We are Iowa State. But today didn't suck.

    Re: Column: The greatest day

The funny thing is, this deal probably gives ISU a better chance to compete with the big boys. Hear me out......if my math is correct, by percentages, ISU's budget is going to increase somewhere in the neighborhood of 33%, while the Texas budget will increase around 20%.

And really, at a certain point, what are you going to do with all that money at Texas, plate your helmets in 24K gold? At ISU, that extra 33% will go towards some things that are really needed. At Texas, it's just more money in the vault.

Good article, Chris. This is absolutely huge for Iowa State.
