Why would travel costs be worse with the Big East than the Mountain West?

I've seen this alluded to several times from people who claim to have good sources with in the AD (one I trust, one I don't as much), that the department is REALLY perturbed by the travel costs associated w/the Big East. Last time I checked, the Mountain West schools were farther away on average.

Obviously the travel costs increase if the Big 12 dies, but if I remember the Big East was our 2nd best option, strictly in that sense. Why would it be worse than the MWC? Makes no sense to me.

I'm interested in an explanation here as well.

Its not that much different but it is only one time zone in the BE, not two. Also there would be much more media coverage in the BE.

Less distance in the big east compared to mwc, and probably cheaper options for getting there. (the farthest distance school is in florida... book some cheap allegiant flights and youre set)

This is meant as no offense to the person who gave the info that you are questioning.

But, this is the AD engaging in the same information campaign as the tweets from UT. I am sure that this is the main site for Iowa State fans to check and see what the fate of the AD is.

The athletic department knows this, and they know that they are fighting what could be a losing battle in where Iowa State ends up.

They see everyone excited about the Big East, and they need to temper that enthusiasm in case it doesn't work out.

Travel to the east coast, especially Washington, DC has been more expensive in my experience. Not just the air fare but hotels too. These guys dont' stay in youth hostels while on the road.

For Kansas and KSU joining the Mountain West would allow them to play schools in border states (Colorado), but from the perspective of ISU none of the teams in either the MWC or the Big West would he a hop, jump, and a skip away.

That's what I would think, the dining also. When I travel I might make accommodations to save money, but I'm not sure the possible inconveniences should apply to ISU student athletes, where time and getting some sleep and back to class is a priority.

That said, more $ in the Big East could help offset the extra expense.

I took a rt flight from dc to cr about six years ago for a wedding. The tickets were 200. I just did a rt from NYC to dm with my wife where we stayed two nights at a decent hotel. The tickets and hotel were six hundred for the both of us. That's been my experience so far.

Not to mention that with the Big East, in basketball you would only be playing the closest teams, not the far east ones.
