    Big 4/5 - MWC 9/10 Merger

First, MWC fan here, I come in peace, not to flame or defend the MWC - I post this and if you have questions I'll answer as best I can.

First assumption is that Utah or Kansas are going to the pac 16.

Would you be open to a 14 team conference merger between the two. We've been kicking this around the last few hours (partly fueled by the big-5 having a conference call). The break down would be something like this:

    East/big7
Kansas (or Air Force if Kansas goes pac16)
    KSU
    Iowa State
    Baylor
    Missouri
    TCU
    New Mexico

    West/Mountain West
    BYU
    Boise State
Utah (or Air Force if Utah goes pac 16)
    Colorado State
    UNLV
    San Diego State
    Wyoming

In the west you have Boise State and BYU (plus Utah if they stay) as top 25 big football programs, BYU, UNLV and San Diego state as top 50 basketball programs
You know about your teams, plus TCU as a top 25 program, and New Mexico was top 15 all last year and Alford signed a 10 year contract.

Basketball Tournament would rotate between Kansas City and Las Vegas
Football Championship perhaps Kansas City, San Diego and/or Denver in rotation

What do you think? Is this a BCS conference? Would you be happy with this alignment/conference for your program?

    Interested in your input.

Best of luck in the future for you guys as I know you guys are subject to the whim of Texas and others.

    Re: Big 4/5 - MWC 9/10 Merger

We're interested in the MWC, but we're hoping for the Big East thing to shake out first.

I think it's crazy, absolutely crazy for people to suggest that the MWC has no interest in ISU. We'd bring a lot more to the conference than some of the current member schools.

I was originally all about the MWC, but if we have an opportunity to join a conference that is already BCS, we'd be foolish to pass on it.

It's one of the top 3 options for us. Not sure which is best though. I'm sure I would grow to be happy in the MWC.

    Re: Big 4/5 - MWC 9/10 Merger

I think it would be prudent for the MWC schools to "join" the remaining 5 Big XII school to retain the BCS bid that the Big XII currently holds. That's just a technicality though and I like the construction of the resulting conference.

    Re: Big 4/5 - MWC 9/10 Merger

as long as we can keep the BCS automatic bid I'd prefer to align with the
MWC over the Big East but either would be an acceptable outcome.
I don't have an issue with the schools in the Big East, I'm just not wild about
the size of the new conference.

    Re: Big 4/5 - MWC 9/10 Merger

There have been a lot of posts on this site discussing a fairly similar scenario of conference alignment. I think you will find a lot of us for that situation, if we could work it out that the MWC would merge to the Big 12 to keep an a****id.

My opinion is that I would like to go to the Big East, because of the markets and the higher quality of teams (no offense). The real uncertainty here now is the PAC-11...because they have shown they are more likely to be deceptive. I'm not worried about the Big Ten raiding the Big East because I don't think they want any of those teams anyhow.

Whatever the outcome, MWC is a good option.

I like it... but move New Mexico to the West division, and give us Colorado St.

    Re: Big 4/5 - MWC 9/10 Merger

My concern is a TV deal would anyone pursue this possible conference for a TV deal? If the MWC wants BCS status then it would be a smart move to merge with the remaining 5 schools. I have always thought the MWC expansion or merger into our conference would be good, but as we all know it is about money could we as a whole make more money? Iowa State brings a lot more to the table than we are getting credit for, I am sorry Iowa State is the smart science geek that does not get asked to prom which really sucks. I have no problem with this or the The Big East we just have to stay BCS!!

    Re: Big 4/5 - MWC 9/10 Merger . . . Big Ten?

Am I like most ISU fans, it'll take a bit of time for emotions come around and accept an athletics realignment with universities with which we have no history?

A merger of remaining Big 12 programs and the MWC, for a reference point, where would ISU football and basketball stadia capacities rank with such a conference?

Seems like ISU would fit pretty well (not perfectly) in a Big Ten western division alignment: ISU, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Northwestern. ISU would not be last in either football or basketball capacities or attendance, correct?

With barnburner leadership from JP and GG, the additional earnings from a Big Ten alignment would almost guarantee a double-deck south end zone project near term. A 56,500 seat stadium would be competitive in the Big Ten.

Yeah, TV sets. But travel expenses for Olympic teams is an important issue, apparently, and Nebraska, not Iowa State, would mark the league's western boundary.

If Nebraska is academically acceptable to the Big Ten, Iowa State is a sure thing on that issue.

not going to have nearly the TV markets as the other conferences but it may come down to our only choice. The bigEast is more $$$$$ but still not great. We should do what everyone else is doing and choose based on which gets us the most $$$$.

Colorado State . . . I attended nine CSU games in 1976 and had a great time doing so. Exciting style of play in that league (I can't remember the conference's name?!) But, it was a 30,000 capacity stadium then; what is it today?

I would love to be in the MWC and I don't see the Big East option happening. In my opinion, beggers can't be choosers at this point in time b/c if we keep holding out for the "better" deal, we will end up in Conference USA or worst yet, the Sun Belt or MAC!
