Maryland is on BT expansion radar

According to Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune, not only is Rutgers -- long-rumored to be on the radar, if for nothing more than the potential of bringing the New York/New Jersey market into the league's television footprint -- still of interest to the conference, but Maryland should be considered part of the expansion equation as well. Greenstein laid out the case for the current ACC member.

Maryland is a large public research institution in a Big Ten border state with two substantial TV markets (Washington and Baltimore) and a decent athletic history.
Maryland is an AAU member and ranks 53rd nationally among public universities (tied with Ohio State and ahead of Purdue, Minnesota, Indiana, Michigan State, Iowa and Nebraska) but has struggled to graduate its football and men's basketball players, producing weak Academic Progress Rate numbers.
It still seems like an "odd" fit for the Big Ten, but Greenstein has been pretty much spot on throughout all of this conference tumult so it bears keeping at least an eye on.

Really? In a potential situation where we move to the Big East, we'd need the best teams in the Big East to be considered a viable conference. Otherwise we're not going to be any better off than the MWC. We'd still have the chance of a BCS game (as it currently sits before the BCS shakes things up), but that's - in all likelihood - going to change.

Also, Maryland makes sense. It's Iowa State with different academics and better athletics.

Maryland has been in the mix and media for a long time. Don't see how the Trib sees this as news

It was a while ago, but Maryland has won 2 national championships in football.

Plus, they just won the it all in basketball in 2002. Better than what we can say.

Of course the Maryland women also won a national basketball title in 2006 under former Cyclone assistant and Cedar Rapids native Brenda Frese.

Re: Maryland is on BT expansion radar

Maryland is one of only 8 schools nationally to have won multiple regular season men's basketball conference championships and gone to bowl games more often than not (6+) since 2000 while being a member of the prestigious AAU.

(We're one of the eight also. )

Hmmmm...both Pollard and Geoffroy were at Maryland, two years (97-98) at the same time.

Re: Maryland is on BT expansion radar

Earlier today, we noted a report from Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune which stated Maryland is a school who could be on the Big Ten's expansion radar.

Just a short time ago, the university's president granted what looked to be a brief interview with the Baltimore Sun in an attempt to diffuse the speculation.

"I haven't heard anything from the Big Ten, and, to the best of my knowledge, Dr. (C.D. "Dan") Mote (the university president) has not either," A.D. Debbie Yow told the Sun.

"The Big Ten is a terrific conference, but Maryland is a charter member in 1953 of the ACC and we are happy in the ACC. These are deep roots."

    So, that's that. For now.

Start the worry beads. Denials always backfire when Delaney is around.
