    Pollard signed through 2012

    DMR LINK

Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard has received a two-year contract extension, university officials said Monday.

"Jamie Pollard's leadership and decision- making skills have strategically positioned our athletics program to make significant improvements," said Gregory Geoffroy, Iowa State president. "He is recognized and respected as one of the top visionaries in college athletics and we're truly appreciative of the remarkable transformations that already have taken place."

Steve Malchow, senior associate athletic director, said Pollard is now under contract through June 30, 2012. Pollard's compensation, which pays a base salary of $286,000 plus an automatic $75,000 annual bonus paid in May, is unchanged, Malchow said.

Pollard also receives $50,000 in deferred compensation as well as a 4 percent raise at the beginning of every fiscal year under his contract.

Pollard, who is in the second year of his original five-year contract, said the two-year extension "was the most important adjustment" made to his contract.

"We have a great deal more work to do and I appreciate the confidence and support President Geoffroy has given to me personally in our efforts to improve the academic, competitive and entertainment aspects of the Iowa State athletics department," he said.

During his tenure, Pollard, a former assistant athletic director at Wisconsin and Maryland, has replaced three of the Cyclones' most visible coaches and has taken ambitious and sometimes controversial steps to improve Cyclone athletic facilities as well as the athletic department's financial base.

Iowa State milestones during Pollard's tenure include a school record of nearly 33,000 season tickets sold for football this fall. The record is partly attributed to Pollard's decision to limit access to tickets for the Sept. 15 Iowa-Iowa State game solely to Cyclone season-ticket buyers

Iowa State also sold a school- record 9,955 season tickets for the men's basketball team in 2006-07 after the dismissal of coach Wayne Morgan and hiring of Greg McDermott.

Pollard also has hired Gene Chizik, a former top assistant at Texas, as the Cyclones' football coach and Olympic gold-medalist Cael Sanderson as the Cyclone wrestling coach. Pollard also has outlined a $135 million facilities improvement program for the next five to 10 years.

"Serving this institution is an honor, and my family is enthused and appreciative to be a part of the Cyclone family," Pollard said.

I'm pretty happy to hear that! I think they did a good job extending him at the same pay. I think that leaves an opening to give him a raise down the road if things continue to go well.

    GOOD NEWS FOR CYCLONE ATHLETICS.

The Rag can't get over the no single game tickets for the Iowa game though.

Neither can Marty & Miller. They talked about it for 40 minutes yesterday.

    Re: Pollard signed through 2012

Seems about right. A little more security for JP and solidness in the ISU ath dept, without giving up a whole bunch.

I wonder if there's any language surrounding that $75K bonus. If not, isn't it just another $75K in pay? I guess it would prevent compounding another 4% each year - but it's just kind of wierd.

I also wonder if he has any other bonus langauage in contract. Like Chizik and McDermott surely have and extra $$$ for a conf championship, $$ for post season. Does JP have that? I would think so.

Really? The whole 15 minutes I listened they were just arguing over whether high school kids would know Mickey Mantle wore #7.

I've been listening on my way home from work (about 10-15 minutes) and they were talking about it a little after 4:30 and Miller said he was tired of talking about it and its only been 30 minutes.

Just a side note, I've really enjoyed listening to them lately. Although Miller is starting to get really annoying with his whole "its summer and there is nothing to talk about so I'll bash any subject that is brought up" routine. (I never thought I'd say Ken Miller is the annoying one of that group)

    Re: Pollard signed through 2012

I heard all that too. Caught the end of it and didn't realize that JP's contract spurred it on.

To Marty's credit, he is the one who said it was too early to start talking about the game and attendance. Somehow that mutated into a recruiting issue for ISU and how we'd lose every kid not signed by the time they're in Jr High because we might have a half empty stadium.

I haven't found them nearly as annoying (the continual Zach Johnson bashing aside). But I maintain what Bruce Willis said in Armageddon. "it's not a choice Grace, it's a lack of options"

    Re: Pollard signed through 2012

Pollard has done some very good things in his short time here. I hope the good things continue to happen; more wins, better facilities, better attendance, etc. If all M & M can talk about is the lack of single game tickets for the EIU FB game, then Pollrad's plan is working. I still think when we approach game week for the Pukeyes, he may open up single ticket sales.

I was thinking the same thing yesterday! Kenny was as annoying as I have ever heard him yesterday. He was railing on this caller who said that his high school kids knew all about Mantle. Trying to say that John Elway should be the #7 everyone knows about. He really needs to get over the Broncos thing. Shouldn't his fav football team be the Argonauts or something anyway?

Maybe the bigs down at KXNO told Kenny to mix it up a bit and not always make Marty be the a$$hole.

I would almost bet my house that won't happen. If it does happen, he will lose credibility with MANY cyclone fans...me included. I don't want our AD to be known as a liar.

Now if he comes up with a creative way to sell the tickets while not going back on his word, then that's fine with me.

That may be true because he is definitely different.

Also, I was out at Prairie Meadows on Saturday night for the horse races...does Miller do the on-track commentary there? I could have sworn that was his voice I heard all night.

I know he used to do horse racing stuff all the time, wouldn't surprise me if it was him.

    Re: Pollard signed through 2012

I think he does the calls at Prarie Meadows - at least some of the time. And doesn't Jeff Kahn (sp?) do the announcing at Principal and the Stars games?
