Kansas to Pac 10 if A&M doesn't accept?

According to Chuck Carlton of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott is flying to the states of Texas and Oklahoma to personally deliver invitations to his conference.

As was reported earlier, Texas A&M could be the fifth school to receive a come-hither look from the Pac-10, but remains firmly planted on the fence. However, Carlton sheds some new light on the A&M situation with word that another member of the Big 12 could be looming very large in the background.

Per Carlton, Kansas and their storied basketball program would be moved upon quickly by the Pac-10 if A&M continues to drag its feet.

This is the first time we are aware of that Kansas has been so concretely linked by a reputable source to a move to the Pac-10, so certainly this could be a means to push A&M to making a decision sooner rather than later. However, Kansas has a lot to offer from both an academic and athletic standpoint so, distance aside, it would make sense that they would be an option.

And, as far as the state of the Big 12 is concerned at the end of the night? As Public Enemy so eloquently put it: So get the morgue, embalm the goner.

I have a feeling this won't happen. If the Big East option is on the table...I don't see why they would want the PAC-11.

Re: Kansas to Pac 10 if A&M doesn't accept?

I posted this in another thread......but I will post again...

    http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/st ories/061210dnospoaggieswavering.931134ce.html

    From Staff and Wire Reports
Texas A&M's wavering on joining the pac-10 with texas, texas tech, oklahoma and oklahoma state could open the door for other schools such as baylor, utah and kansas.
A highly placed official from a big 12 school told the austin american-statesman that "a&m is sitting on the fence."
Baylor, which seemed to be looking on the outside after Colorado accepted the Pac-10's invitation to join this week, might be back in. It all depends on A&M, the official told the Statesman.
''If A&M doesn't go, Baylor's got a window to go," the official said. "(Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech) -- none of them have anything against Baylor. We're not opposed to Baylor, and we've said positive things about them."
But, the official continued, "The schools on the West Coast just don't see the benefit of Baylor. The Pac-10 is talking more about Kansas and Utah because they bring different (television) markets. Baylor's been lobbying everybody around Texas. They need to be lobbying California."

Re: Kansas to Pac 10 if A&M doesn't accept?

And no KSU? Does the Pac 10 have no interest whatsoever in Baylor? And I take it the TX legislature is not pushing Texa$ at all any more to take BU with them? KU would be a much better fit with the Big East and the basketball tradition.

Hilton Coliseum was specifically built to hold in sound with a solid concrete structure, steel doors, and a crowd that sits just a few feet from the court. With a fan base that frequently ranks among the nations largest crowds, players from opposing teams, as well as Iowa State, have said that the floor has shaken due to the loudness of the crowd

I can't see why any college would opt for the Big East over the Pac-11 at this point; it would be a no-brainer even for a basketball school like Kansas to select the PAC-11 over the Big East; the PAC-11 is going places, while the Big East is nothing but a house of cards.

Count on this, whatever happens it will be the worst possible scenario for ISU. Man, how much grief can come to one school?

Re: Kansas to Pac 10 if A&M doesn't accept?

The Pac 11 is going places, but Kansas will never be able to compete in football. They would be stuck with Texas, OU, Texas Tech, ASU, AU, Ok State and Colorado. They would be anywhere between 6th and 8th in their division. What do they gain from this in basketball? The Pac 10 is weak conference in basketball, barely got two teams to the NCAA tourney. Going to the Pac 10 hurts their RPI because the conference just isn't that strong. As for other sports - Kansas would suffer in the non-revenue sports as well. I guess if the money is better than always being mediocre, then you take it.

Re: Kansas to Pac 10 if A&M doesn't accept?

Why Kansas might prefer the Big East:

    - only a one hour difference in time zone.
    - better chance to win the Big East in football and get that automatic BCS bid.
    - plenty of Bball games on ESPN.

Why Kansas might prefer the Pac 10:

    - keep rivalry going with the Oklahoma and Texas schools.
    - easier to recruit in state of Texas for football and California for basketball
    - Pac 10 is perceived as more stable than Big East.

It would be nice if the Big 10 and SEC would act first with regard to their raid on other conferences. Until then, we won't know exactly how stable the Big East is.

ISU would go to the PAC-10 in a heartbeat.....better academics, more stability, and more money.

The remaining schools can say they're unified, but it's everyone for themselves right now.

I've heard Utah is going to get tha spot. They've been in line for it fr a while. There's some politics involved that could go a long ways for Utah.

So all of the talk that KU can't join a conference without KSU because of some state law was just smoke?

I'm convinced a restructured and rebranded Big East will be stable. Right now, yes, it is a house of cards.
