Another, perhaps better, new Big 12 configuration.

Here's another configuration that might be an even better conference:

    Pittsburgh
    Cincinnati
    Louisville
    Missouri
    Iowa State
    Baylor

    Utah
    TCU
    BYU
    Kansas
    KSU
    Boise State

Not as large and unwieldy with just 12 teams but has enough to ensure a BCS AQ slot and to have a championship game. Some very strong programs in both football and basketball.

I'd be surprised if Pittsburgh isn't in the Big 10 five years from now.

It's an academic powerhouse and a strong athletic school. The Big 10 seems to have shown that the TV footprint isn't the driving force everyone thought it was (sorry, Mizzou). And i don't think the Big 10 is stopping at 12 anymore.

Pitt's pretty much fallen out of that conversation. Maryland, Syracuse and Rutgers all seem to be ahead of Pitt for a slot. Add in Notre Dame, which will likely come around over the summer, and Mizzou is out as well.

I like the idea of WVU even the the distance isnt appealing...still closer than Texas (and drop Boise St. out of your prediction and I like it)

Rutgers i understand. It's a flagship state university in a one-public-university state. Strong research reputation, academically strong. Maryland and Syracuse, i don't. Neither of those two schools really fit the Big 10 mold, academically or culturally, in my opinion.

The first grouping could make for some interesting hoops matchups.

Certainly could...I think there'd be some great football as well.

There is absolutely no truth to that. All rumors and speculation.

Re: Another, perhaps better, new Big 12 configuration.

The key to any new conference is only 12 teams, two divisions. If you go more than 12, you may only get the chance to play everybody once. Example - we get a home and home with Kansas every year in bball, with more than 12 teams, you would most likely lose that. The KU game in Ames is always sold out. It would be nice to keep some of the old B8 rivalries if possible.

I agree that Syracuse doesn't fit the mold at all, but Maryland does fit the mold of strong research reputation and strong academics. And if culture really mattered as much as they imply, they wouldn't be courting Rutgers, Syracuse, Texas, and A&M as strongly as they have. This is simply about money, and for all the whining all of us ISU fans are doing, the candidates are going to bring in just as much research dollars as ISU would have, if not more.

I'm actually surprised Virginia's not getting mentioned in a package deal with Maryland.

How about we make start a coup and steal Minn, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois and Nortwester from the Big 10 and isolate UNL from the rest of the Big 10!!

Re: Another, perhaps better, new Big 12 configuration.

I think with Colorado gone and Nebraska leaving, Texas teams are mad because they can't take Baylor with them, angry at Pac-10 for signing the Buffs 1st.
So lets all stay and recruit Utah and Boise to the Big 12 .
They would be the new teams in the North and give us some power balance.
