    Grassley could help ISU

So I'm not the one you want to hear news like this from but I'll give it to you anyways ... I'll probably get yelled at by the Rivals folks for not writing this on CR but oh well....

I just got off the phone with Sen Chuck Grassley's office - look for an interview with Chris and I either today or tomorrow on "Matt and Miller" but his office told me that the Senator is serious about challenging colleges' Federal Non-profit status if expansion happens and the mega-conferences get a ton of TV money from it.

See this story: Colleges Face Tax Challenges From the IRS

Grassley is already leading the charge into all non-profit tax organization law....he could really cause some big problems $$-wise in the future for these schools. While I don't think he could affect expansion cause of how fast it's happening - he could really hit back for hurting Iowa State.

Two words come to mind...one begins with an F, the other is YEAH.

I'll give Grassley a lot of credit. For a conservative, he's sure ****** off a lot of conservatives by challenging the non-profit status of some of these mega-churches. And obviously he's pursued the issue with college athletics, to the ire of many.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE college sports but I also know that, in its present form, it is not consistent with the missions of these universities. The current model simply isn't sustainable over the long term and someday it will crash. When, I don't know - it may take another economic crisis 30 years from now. But it can't go on. And I say that regardless of where ISU ends up.

    Re: Grassley could help ISU

All this conference re-alignment is strictly based on money. I think it's fair game to question their tax status with the type of dollars likely involved with these decisions. But 1 thing I hate hearing is these politicians thinking they have any leverage at all to affect what schools wind up doing. It's all political positioning by them, they have no power or leverage to keep the Big 12 from breaking up or a certain school changing conferences. Anyone who believes that they do are morons that just bought into the political tactic they used to get your attention and support.

Hate to say it, cause I love Chuck. Quality person, quality family.

But I'll believe it when I see it.

I agree with your point Matt that the number one obstacle for congressional action is the speed with which this all is apparently going to happen. Second is the fact that other representative won't hurt their players in the super conferences.

No, but they have the power to remove the tax exemption for the conferences and that my good man is some serious jack that could make the conferences think differently about expanding.

How does this help ISU? Getting back at schools after they already left doesn't do **** for us.
