I don't get the ultimatum to NU and MU

They have until Friday to tell the B12 if they are going to go to the B10...or what? What happens if NU and MU don't decide by Friday? The B12 kicks them out? The B12 forces them to stay? The B12 has nothing to threaten them with in making that "ultimatum".

    GO CYCLONES!!!

Those 6 leave for the pac 10.

"deciding" will probably come in the form of signing a binding agreement with very large financial penalties for leaving later.

Big 12 has a lot to threaten them with, if they don't commit to the conference by Friday, they would lose their share of revenue through the conference. So they could still remain in the conference but would be penalized the revenue sharing.

That is already in place, any team leaving the conference without 2 years notice has to pay like a $20 m penalty or something like that.

In theory if they do not decide by Friday then Texas will leave for the PAC 10 and Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, and either Baylor or Colorado will follow them. If Nebraska and Missouri do not eventually get an invitation to join the Big Ten then they could be left without a viable conference.

If you have 9 votes you can control them. Alternatively, the Texas-6 all leave and everyone else is stuck with their you know what in their hand.

The penalties can be upped which makes it hard for anyone to leave.

But any team leaving would likely not leave for 2 years anyway. The potential new agreement would lengthen the required notice period and/or raise the amount owed even if required notice is given.

    Just my opinion.

The purpose of the deadline is to squarely place blame on NU and MU. Then, UT and the southern schools can explore the Pac 10 option while continuing to blame NU for the dissolution of the conference.

Well, technically if Texas does indeed want the Big12 to remain it would be Nebraska's fault for tearing it apart. Now, if Nebraska does not get their invitation by Friday they may have some bargaining chips to get stuff done that they've wanted but couldn't get the votes. I wouldn't be surprised if they came back and said that they wanted some demands met for them to stay in the conference. That would then put Texas back in the position of causing the conference's demise if they don't agree.

Re: I don't get the ultimatum to NU and MU

Honesly, I don't believe there is an "ultimatum," in spite of the many reports stating there is. Tom Osborne has made it clear since he left the conference meetings that he is unaware of any deadlines or ultimatums issued by the conference. Yes, an "ultimatum" could have been issued after he left Thursday evening, but you would certainly think that NL Chancellor Harvey Perlman would have brought Osborne up to speed, and fast, on something as important as an "ultimatum."

The bottom line is that the smouldering Big 12 Conference has no clout, at this point. They can act tough all they want, but member schools are going to make decisions based on what they feel is best for their respective schools. And do you honestly think the Big 12 is going to put the "hammer down" on Nebraska when everybody seems to think that without Nebraska anchoring the North, the Conference is no longer viable? Not on your life. Beebee may talk tough to the press, but behind closed doors, he is in full bore "grovel mode."

I was under the impression that the invites to the pac 10 didn't come about until after the ultimatum was given to NU and MU.

If that is not the case The south schools are just as guilty at looking around at NU and MU and the whole thing proves why NU wants out of the Big 12.

Re: I don't get the ultimatum to NU and MU

if nebraska and mizzou leave then you will see those 2 and the texas 6 all agree to disband the conference before they actually sign anything for another conference at which time all they need is one more team between CU/Baylor, ISU, KU, and KSU to say disband and there is no buyout. We could get double hosed if one of those schools also has an out.

I have no idea why any of those schools would vote themselves out of the huge amount of financial gain they would stand to get. The only way I see that happening would be if the Pac 10 or Big 10 invited one of those schools in addition to everyone we know about.

apparently the pac 10 was making visits to these schools a couple weeks ago.

Though everyone is 'exploring' options, texas and co may have agreed that the big 12 is their best option, and they now just want Nebraska to reaffirm their commitment to the big 12 as well. Who knows, maybe everyone else *did* sign the same type of agreement?
