Notre Dame and the Big 10 are in deliberations?

If there is one school that could possibly -- possibly -- put a halt to a conference apocalypse at the ready to change the collegiate football landscape for evermore, it's Notre Dame.

And, yes, I can hear it now. "Notre Dame hasn't been relevant for 20 years!!! What do they have to do with anything???" That sentiment is understood, but hear me out for just a coupla minutes.

If Notre Dame were to accept an offer from the Big Ten -- and, make no mistake, the Irish are still the apple of the Big Ten's eye. Right below Texas -- it's conceivable that the conference would stop at that and not pilfer other leagues. The Irish and their flung-far-and-wide fan base would give them a national television footprint for their television network that no other school/schools could come close to matching.

If that were to happen, the Pac-10 might -- might -- stand down from their six-school plundering of the Big 12. Maybe they'd look to add a Colorado and a Utah, but nothing as earth-shattering as the option of imploding one of the six BcS conferences that's currently on commissioner Larry Scott's to-do list.

With the Irish finally in the Big Ten's clutches, it could, basically, be status quo for all of the other "major" conferences, with the exception of a tweaked Pac-10 and a Big 12 featuring a replacement for Colorado.

No implosion of the Big 12, Big East, nothing. Again, just a couple of tweaks. Maybe.

With that as a backdrop, Pete Thamel of the New York Times dropped an interesting nugget on his Twitter feed this evening.

According to Thamel, and based on a conversation with an unnamed BcS athletic director, "Notre Dame and the Big Ten are very much in deliberations."

And so it begins anew. The Golden Domers and their Midwest brothers-from-a-different-mother continuing a flirtation that's gone on for decades.

Nebraska the linchpin as far as conference expansion is concerned? Please. Very likely, it will once again come down to the Big Ten's utter infatuation with the school in South Bend.

    And, finally, a consummation.

Those hoping for minimal change in the structure of college football had better pray for Notre Dame to lay down and get biblical with the Big Ten. And soon, with a "loyalty deadline" for the corn shuckers looming.

This is pretty much my dream scenario.

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.

Re: Notre Dame and the Big 10 ar in deliberations?

Notre Dame to the Big10 is about the most money the Big10 could get. Here is why.

Its right in the middle of the frickin conference already. Saving a ton of time and travel cost for every sport.

They are getting you a ton of TV revenue

Getting only 1 more team gets you a title game which gives you a ton of money

Notre Dame is one the best schools in the country so the B10 gets what they wish for.

All this is then only divided by 12 instead of 16. I would imagine this could push teams into the 25-30 Million mark once you factor in more tv money, Title game and probably an extra bowl game would get assigned. This is the best thing for that conference IMO.

That could very well leave everything alone for awhile (at least enough time to get our tv contract somewhere in between the acc and sec. Of course that is another can of worms with Texas and all.

I think this is the eventual outcome. ND joins the BigTen, Colorado splits to the Pac-10, Boise joins the MWC and everyone sleeps well at night knowing that the rivalries we've nurtured over the past 100 years are 92% intact.

There's a lot of bad blood in the Big 12 at this point, not sure how that will play into the conference moving forward if this happens.

Except wouldnt the PAC10 take 2 teams? Why stop at 11? And then the Big12 would probably want to add one.

"Cheer, cheer for old Notre Dame/WAKE UP THE ECHOES cheering her name".

    Make it happen, and I have a new #2. Wait...I've never had a #2.

Re: Notre Dame and the Big 10 ar in deliberations?

    Then we take?
Not a ton of options here and I thought Texas has made it known that they don't want TCU and Houston in the conference.

    BYU
    TCU
    BSU
    Memphis
    Houston
    ?????

I just hope all this is true. Nothing like getting your hopes up and having the kick get blocked. Thats never happened before.

I think Pac-10 could add another team in addition to BSt., that makes sense.

As far as the BigXII adding another team, I think it will be either -

    Arkansas
    Air Force
    New Mexico

I think after the BigXII renegotiates its TV contract, the conference will have enough incentive to get a pretty decent team to replace Colorado.

The story posted by the OP came from John Taylor on NBC Sports Online. An update was posted 20 minutes ago. Notre Dame's AD said those reports "are just not true." Ugh.

I think they'll join regardless. If this whole $hi7 storm can be stopped by Notre Dame and the money is there for the Irish, they'll do the right thing and sign up with the BigTen.

Re: Notre Dame and the Big 10 are in deliberations?

You know what would be a great scenario, that would fit perfectly geographically:

    Colorado joins the MWC

Iowa joins the Big 12 (stays the "Big 12" and would then leave the Big 10 with just 10)

Notre Dame joins the Big 10 (or not, this one isn't necessary)

problem is, the big 12 has nothing to offer Iowa. They would be an excellent addition to the Big 12, but a poor choice by iowa. And, the big 12 hardly recognizes Iowa State as a current institution. So its not like they give two ***** about adding another school into the North
