Anyone else NOT concerned about conference expansion/realignment?

There has been A LOT of talk over the last couple weeks about what will or won't happen. What is the future of the Big 12? Who's going where and what does this mean for Iowa State University?

I for one am not concerned about what the future may hold. Why? Because I have no control over it. Whether or not Iowa State is in a major conference, there still will be a football team that takes the field at Jack Trice Stadium six times a year, and the basketball teams will continue to take the court at Hilton.

Will it suck if Iowa State ends up moving to a smaller/lesser conference? It might. It may also mean that Iowa State will have a chance to be more competitive. A chance to be one of the bigger fishes in a smaller pond instead of being a smaller to medium sized fish in a big pond getting eaten up by the bigger fish.

Might it mean less revenue in some ways? Probably. But maybe more fans will be willing to pay to see Iowa State be more competitive. Even if it is against lesser schools.

Am I saying that us fans shouldn't discuss what may happen? No, I'm not saying that at all. I haven't been reading every article on the topic, but if I come across something that I know Iowa State is part of the main topic, I'll stop to read it. I'm just saying we shouldn't get too wound up and concern ourselves in what is going on about what might happen.

Re: Anyone else NOT concerned about conference expansion/realignment?

If ISU had been in a mid major conference while I was growing up, I probably never would have gone to ISU. I bet I'm not the only one here that can say that.

My point: ISU not being in a major conference is bad for a lot of reasons that have nothing to do with college athletics.

But ISU was in a major conference, and you are a fan. Are you not going to be one if we aren't?

Re: Anyone else NOT concerned about conference expansion/realignment?

Well it sure adds something to what is typically a boring summer of threads...although I think I would prefer that at this point. Not really worried, find it humorous to see all the SEC talk about expansion when here in SEC country they have no desire to expand and already have a great TV deal with their network, ESPN, that they don't need extra schools taking up the revenue.

The Big East was supposed to be dead several years back when Miami and Va Tech left, and they seem to be doing ok for themselves. The Big 12 will be just fine. May have some changes, but it will still be around. (Fully prepared to eat crow...)

All I am Saying is the talk is getting annoying. Its hard to determine who to believe. I agree with Al4State. Division one Athletics is not why I chose to come to Iowa State, but it is the reason I am a Cyclone Fanatic. If being in division one does not help draw fans, I would have had to choose between Morningside and Briar Cliff...

There are many worse off schools out there than ISU. I just fail to get all worked up about it, I guess.

Re: Anyone else NOT concerned about conference expansion/realignment?

No doubt I would have been an Iowa State fan regardless of the conference they were in as I was growing up. Frankly, Pete Taylor probably had more to do with me becoming a fan of ISU football and basketball than any other influence. My earliest memories are of play-by-play of David Archer on a crappy AM radio in a truck or tractor during harvest.

However, after being in a major conference and playing championship caliber teams in football, basketball and even the women's sports in the Big-8 and Big-XII, stepping into a conference that doesn't provide that level of competition will be a dissappointment whether we dominate the conference or not.

I don't know what the future holds, but the prospect of being in a conference that's not arguable one of the best in the nation in football and basketball each year, along with the complete lack of interest from any of the major conferences in having ISU be part of their plans, has me quite depressed.

I never thought of this. I was set on going to SDSU until January of my second year at a JUCO. I switched. I don't remember for sure but the thought of the Cyclone football games instead of SDSU ones probably had an impact. I doubt a lot of people are like this, but some are.

    Good point Al.

I'll still be a fan. I'm talking about what's going to happen to both the university and the fanbase long term. I'm saying that our fanbase is going to shrink, as is our university.

And for the record, I really won't be as a vigorous of a fan if we're playing in the MAC. It will have more to do with a hatred of college football for killing something I love, but I'm not going to care as much about playing Bowling Green and Toledo as conference games. I'm not going to be a Hawkeye or Husker, rather I'll probably just feel much less passionately about college football altogether.

I agree, There is nothing that I or this message board can do about this. What will happen will happen.

I will always be Cyclone through thick and thin. Bring it all on. We'll hit them coming off the bus whether they are big 12 opponents or anyone else. Whats great about Iowa State is the atmosphere. We have a great game day experience and a great basketball arena.

I have no doubt in my mind that the Iowa State will continue to be a great institution after this all works out.

I went to ISU for several reasons, and almost NONE of them had anything to do with my major. They were chiefly: I wanted to go to a "big time" college, I had grown up cheering for the Cyclones (and the Hawks, actually), and I vastly preferred the feel of Ames and the ISU campus to Iowa City and the U of I campus. ISU was/is "big time" because it has a major conference affiliation. I never even remotely considered UNI or any private college or community college. These might not have been great reasons for picking a school, but it's worked out pretty well for me.

I not worrying about right now. Just added stress. If it happens, it happens. I'll always be a Clone. No one knows how this will turn out. May the Big10 will add five more and we are one. You never know.
