ISU and KU to the Big East?

Barry Tramel of the Oklahoman thinks it's a possibility.

Emails in on Pac-16 and realignment | Berry Tramel's Blog

It's nice to hear from somebody that is somewhat knowledgeable about what ISU and it's fans have to offer a major conference:

Iíve already talked about Kansas, but some have said the Jayhawks to the Big East. Why not, especially if the ACC siphons off some Big East football schools. West Virginia, maybe Syracuse if the Big Ten doesnít get there first. And how about Iowa State joining KU in the Big East. The Big East could be caught looking for any university with a decent number of shoulder pads. Iowa State isnít a bad football school; it usually has a bad football team, but itís not a bad football school. Draws about 40,000 per game. Kansas State I think is almost certainly headed to the Mountain West. The Colorado/Baylor loser, too. The Mountain West would be a fun conference to be in, but your prestige takes a hit. Your prestige and your wallet.

yeah that makes no sense to separate KU and K-State

Re: ISU and KU to the Big East?

The only problem with this theory - if the Big 10 and Pac 10 go superconference, what do you think the SEC is going to do? Go superconference as well. Who are they going to raid? The ACC - most notably Georgia Tech, Florida St, Miami, and Clemson (although I do think there's an outside shot at UNC). You think the ACC is going to stand pat? Hardly. While they may go after a few CUSA schools such as East Carolina, they're going to finish off the remaining members of the Big East - Syracuse, UConn, Central Florida, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Louisville, and Cincinnati.

In other words, if NCAA Armageddon takes place, there's not going to be much of a Big East left for ISU and Kansas to join...

Correct. The SEC will be raiding the ACC (Florida State, Miami, Virginia Tech), not the Big East.

I lost respect for the article when they said that UNC adds nothing to the SEC. That would be about as big of a coup as landing Texas. I'm just not convinced UNC wants to go to the SEC (although a week ago I never thought there was a legitimate chance of Texas going to the Pac 10).

Re: ISU and KU to the Big East?

I personally like the idea of isu with Kansas n ksu with maybe memphis to the big east. It's already a great bball conference and those additions would make it that much more deadly. I don't think the sec expands. As it is they make about as much as the PAC 10 hopes to make with grabbing Texas et al. Plus if they keep the bcs invites as is, the super conferences could only get two bids anyway. It could be used as a way to discourage what the big 10 and PAC 10 appear to be attempting.

Re: ISU and KU to the Big East?

Kansas and Kansas State will stay in the same conference if the Regents that have spoken are in the majority. If the Big 12 folds, the Kansas State people much prefer landing in the Mountain West. The Kansas people are too hacked off at being tied to Kansas State to think clearly about anything else. For some unknown reason, the Jayhawk fans think the SEC would welcome them if they were not tied to KSU. Both schools landing in the Big East is not being discussed to the best of my knowledge.

SEC might if they weren't tied to KSU but that won't happn so the SEC doesn't waste its time

KU is no longer tied to KSU. When push came to shove the regents have backed down. If this all goes down the Big East will be the next conference to fall.

making one wonder why the Big XII holdovers and the Big East holdovers wouldn't just band together into a new Big XII/XIV, or something similar.

This is what I'm thinking as well. If Pac 10 goes 16 and Big 10 goes 14 or 16, SEC and ACC will probably poach from the Big East to keep up with the superconferences.

Off the cuff, I like the idea of joining the MWC better.

Re: ISU and KU to the Big East?

If your talking about any merger with the Big east, I think you can only talk about football since they have 16 members for all of the other sports other than football. I would favor a big east move for football and then finding a more centrally located conference for the other sports.
