The latest from OrangeBlood Chip (6:00 PM 6/7)...

Chip was being interviewed by Galloway and Company on ESPN 103.3 Dallas from about 5:30 to 5:50 PM. Chip is good buddies with Randy Galloway. I missed a little bit, but here's what I got:

    1) The UT line is that UT feels that NU is the school that they have the best relationship with in the North, and their closest ally on policy decisions. Powers and Perlman get along extremely well, despite Osborne's sour attitude. Chip was admonished by a UT official last night for mischaracterizing the relationship between UT and NU.

    2) The Pac-10 offered $20 Million/yr in TV revenue to the six Big 12 schools. FOX is the network.

    3) Academics is mostly irrelevant as far as the Pac-10 is concerned. They hired Larry Scott to raise their revenue and conference profile. Scott is a TV marketer.

    4) The Pac-10 considered a proposal to invite Utah and CU last weekend, but it did not generate the excitement among the Pac-10 administrators that adding six does.

    5) Baylor has a very well organized legislative lobby. The Pac-10 wants UT, A&M, and OU. They'll take whoever else needs to come along to get those three.

    6) The Big Ten is not talking to anyone else other than ND right now.

    7) NU may get until 6/15, when their governing board meets.

    8) The six are not likely to bolt if MU goes. The six are likely to bolt if NU goes.

So it literally is in NU's hands, isn't it? Why does that scare the living daylights out of me?

Also... tell me who does care about academics anymore? Nobody... that's who. Not if all this expansion goes down. They can't even keep a straight face and lie about academics mattering after that... as if it truly mattered before anyway?

The Big 10 taking NU would show that they don't care about academics anymore too.

The Outside the Lines program on ESPN seemed to come to the same conclusion that the Big 10 is first and foremost interested in ND. The Pac 10 maneuver to raise the stakes to a 16 team super league may actually work in our favor. The analysts on ESPN seemed to indicate ND will consider the Big 10. Maybe that would quiet everything down.

They also noted that adding CU and Utah may be a net negative for each Pac 10 school in TV revenue.

The more I think about it, UT to the Pac 10 doesn't make sense. UT has it great now, and blowing up the Big 12 to spite NU would be dumb.

I think universities are more concerned about maximizing revenue in athletics (especially in the economic times we're in) than playing opponents who are up to their academic standards.
For example, Stanford is worried that their newly rebuilt stadium only sells out for the Cal and USC games. They want brand names like OU and Texas coming to Palo Alto.

Those 3 should say they need to take the rest of the Big 12. Then they could add Utah and BYU and split East/West into 2 12 team Conferences. Then split each of those into 6 team North/South divisions. Problem solved.

Something tells me although this guy knows a lot about the Texas/Pac 10 angle I don't think he knows anything about what the Big 10 wants. There have been two separate reports saying the Big 10 has been talking with Texas and another saying Tom Osbourne has been talking with Tressel from Ohio State. The Big 10 has a lot more going on besides talking to ND. Add to that the quote from the Big 10 meetings where they said that the expansion could come in phases.

Then why not stay the big 12?

No, it is literally in the Big10's hands. Nebraska will jump 0.05 seconds after they receive the invite. The only question now is whether they get that invite.

UT is not interested in the Big 10. Maybe UT is talking to the Big 10 about the chance UN-Lincoln gets an offer from the Big 10.

I didn't say that. Chip is saying the Big 10 is only looking at ND while there have been reports that people in the Big 10 have talked to others besides ND, including Texas and Nebby. Just trying to show that while Chip has the Texas/Pac 10 info locked down he probably doesn't know jack about what the Big 10 is up to.
