    Big 10 Expansion Notes

Big Ten presidents talk expansion - Big Ten Blog - ESPN

Simon said the league hasn't settled on a wish list, but the suspects are fairly obvious. She also made it very clear that academics remain a huge part of the Big Ten's expansion process. This league isn't going to admit second-rate academic institutions, so there's no point in speculating about them. "I've facetiously said that at the start of this process," she said, "if we had given fifth graders the criteria, the list of institutions would be essentially the [same] list of institutions that have been bandied about for quite a while by [the media] with much more sophisticated analysis of the sense of fit [by the media]. But as I look at your analysis, academics hasn't been much of the conversation. That's an important component of this. This is not an infinite set of institutions." Does this mean I'm not as smart as a fifth grader? Ouch!
I wonder what school she is talking about here.

Mizzou and Nebraska really dilute the Big 10 brand, academically and maybe more importantly, facility-wise. Neither school has the research facilities that the Big 10 schools have.

I think both these schools would love the opportunity, academically, to be included in the Big 10 brand. I'm not certain, at the president/chancellor level though, that this feeling is mutual.

I think you're spot on. outside of athletics and the money that comes with that they bring nothing to the table. and to a conference that has pimped their academic standards for a very long time, this definitely could be a major detractor.

    Does Mizzou bring athletics?

Here's a great link I found from USNews.com. It shows univeristy rankings by conference, and was posted on March 15, 2010. Not as up-to-date as I would like, but is nice to use as a reference for all this expansion talk.

Hmmm. That's good, but will it actually help your academic standing in the short run? Isn't that what the Big 10's focused on right now?

Wow. Congrats. Is Nebraska a Tier 1 research institution yet?

    Nope.

The Big10 accepting Nebraska as a member is a slap to the other academic institutions in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, especially the University of Chicago. Oh you thought the Big10 was just about athletics? Wrong.

Also, I am pretty sure that in the academic world, the University of Missouri is held in much higher esteem than Nebraska. I know we like to make fun of our dentally challenged neighbors to the south, but let's at least be fair.

That's a pretty startling list when you look at it and if academics are truly the concern of the Big Ten then they should look east for expansion.

The highest rated North school would become the lowest rated Big Ten school if they were added. Colorado is ranked 77th and Iowa is in a 3-way tie for lowest in the Big Ten at 71st. Texas and Texas A&M are 47 and 61, respectively. They would be a package deal however and likely force the Big Ten to take another team to give even numbers.

If they were to expand east they have the pick of Notre Dame (20th), Pittsburgh (56th), Syracuse (58th), Rutgers and UConn (66th).

I'm sure current academic standing is one thing the Big 10 is looking at, and I am just as certain that future academic capabilities are another. Nebraska's new innovation campus doesn't help them today, but it will definitely improve their future as a research institution.
