World Cup Referee Designations Matches 1-16

    Referee Designations

Great the US gets a terrible official for the opening match against England. Carlos Simon was suspended last Nov in Brazil for "repeated mistakes"! How is this guy allowed to Ref in the World Cup?

Not only that Simon handed out 17 cards in 3 matches in the 2006 World Cup. I don't like this at all. However, we did get a shaky ref in the opening match of the 2002 WC and that turned out pretty well against Portugal.

I think we almost have to start Torres now in the CM with Bradley. Clark is a Card machine and we can't risk having him sent off.

Re: World Cup Referee Designations Matches 1-16

While it's never a good thing to have a bad ref officiating a game, perhaps it's not a terrible thing if the calls are going in our favor. The way I see it, England's the one team in the group that USA's not going to be able to run ragged with its fitness, and with the clear exception of goaltending (Howard being one of the better goalies in the world while England's goaltending is an absolute question mark), I'm not sure the USA has an advantage anywhere else on the field. Even with the disadvantages we're going to keep the game close - we always play these games close. Perhaps this ends up being an "equalizer" in the game - or if this guy has it out for us it could be what guarantees the loss. Hard to say at this point.

Why should you change your gameplan for a referee? We should put out a roster that has the best chance of beating England. If we are holding anything back from the start its going to be a long cup.

We have our boys faking injuries as it will be useful with this flake ref.

I still USA moves on going 2-1 with their lone loss to England. I hope I'm wrong. I'd love to beat England. It would be similar to when we beat Canada in Hockey (even though we lost the gold medal game).

2-1-0 (with that 1 being England) is an expected and acceptable outcome for group play for the US. 3-0-0 or even 2-0-1 would be gravy. As far as the USA hockey AND "gold medal game" reference, USA finishing second in the World Cup would have a much more significant impact on US Soccer than winning the silver medal at the Olympics had on USA Hockey.

Maybe if we beat Brazil in Maricana...than maybe this analogy would be similar.

As far as depth goes though, the combination of White, Woodbury, Olaseni, Basabe, and Uthoff is much better than Niang, Ejim, Edozie, Gibson. Not because of the top 2, but because of the next 2 or 3. -DeanVogs
