Gas going up in DSM area

Rumor flying around work that gas is on it's way up to $3.10 later today, or tomorrow. Came from a co-worker who has a relative that works for a service station.

Seems a little strange since it just went from $2.89 to $2.99 last night. But take it for what it's worth.

Not saying it won't happen, but oil prices have dipped in recent days. That should help with the gas prices a little

Right now the squeez has less to do with oil prices and more to do with refinery capacity as refiner switch to summer blends.

This is the impact of environmental laws preventing new refinery construction for 25 or so years.

I believe demand is a big part of these gas rate hikes...

Re: Gas going up in DSM area

It's been $3.14 since Monday here in eastern WI.

Our gas jumped from 2.92 to 3.14 over 3 days, with stops at 2.97 and 3.05.

Re: Gas going up in DSM area

    Myth - at least partially.

Last year in testimony to congress, I believe it was the head of Exxon stated that there is no future designs on building refineries due to the "expansion of ethanol".

Environmental laws are strict, sure enough. Then again companies run amok when they aren't. But the fact is that refineries aren't built because oil companies make money when they're running at capacity, and when they aren't running at all. Why increase capacity and drive down prices while inheriting the costs of the construction, when you can maintain a minimal margin and keep prices high while spending nothing? Lesson learned from the 80's oil glut.

Re: Gas going up in DSM area

Went from 2.94 last night to 2.99 this morning and when I went to lunch I saw it had been raised again to 3.04. I should have filled my gas barrels this winter when it was 1.96. what a rip.

businesscy- can you name any of these environmental laws or is this what Limbaugh and co. spew? I'm kinda glad we do have some environmental regualation (see: former soviet union and china nowadays with environmental degradation going ape$#!+). There are a proposed 35 new coal-fired power plants projected for Texas in the next decade. If these can go up so easily, who can't oil refineries?

If the refineries have to switch blends seasonally, then how come last fall as the refineries would be switching blends to winter mode, prices still dropped over september and october? OHHH! It didn't have anything to do with the midterm elections did it?

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

likely not since annually gas prices begin skyrocketing in May and plummeting in September/October

Sounds like what they spew on Air America

With the price of oil falling slightly in correlation with the price of Gas increasing the spread has to settle at some point. Look for prices to steady through the Memorial Day holiday and ultimately decline after that. $4 and $5 gas is a myth at this point since there are no economical numbers to back the idea. I am pretty sure that the Chicken Little's were calling for $100/barrel oil 2 years ago, it is all good fodder for conversation but not much more.

Re: Gas going up in DSM area

If anyone thinks gas is going to decline this summer, they are kidding themselves. The summer is when the oil companies really make their money. I'm guessing gas will stay at around $3 for most of the summer if not increase because of the demand.

It happens every year...people predict gas will peak at Memorial Day and decline through the summer. But it never happens that way.
