Could the Big XII survive mass exodus?

Okay, so lets pretend that CU, OSU, OU, Ttech, UT, and aTm all leave for the Pac 10 and NU and MU join the Big 10. At this point does the Big XII automatically dissolve or will it continue to exist at least in theory? What is the formal process of discontinuing a conference? What happened, for instance, when the SW conference disbanded?

I am wondering if there is any possibility that ISU, BU, KU and KSU could band together and keep the Big XII alive by inviting other teams to join? For instance when the ACC raided the Big East, the Big East didn't fold but found new members like UConn, Cincy, and USF. Even thought the new Big East was not a powerhouses they still retained their BCS status. Could a similar scenario occur with the Big XII?

Say ISU, KSU, KU, and Baylor stick it out and go recruiting. There are a lot of schools out west who have BCS caliber football programs and would love nothing better than to join a BCS conference. While there is talk us joining the MWC, wouldn't it be more logical if the Big XII would redefine itself by adding teams from the MWC and WAC? Instead of banding together with schools like of Boise State, Utah, and BYU in hopes of creating a BCS conference, why not just keep the Big XII alive as a BCS ready league? I'm sure these programs would jump ship to a BCS Big XII in a heartbeat.

Here is what a new Big XII could look like.

    East:
    Iowa State
    Kansas
    Kansas State
    TCU
    Houston
    Baylor

    West:
    Utah
    BYU
    Boise State
    Air Force
    Colorado State
    Fresno State

Basketball-wise the Big XII could expand to a 16 team conference much like the Big East

    East:
    Iowa State
    Kansas State
    Kansas
    Creighton
    Baylor
    Memphis
    TCU
    Houston

    West:
    Utah
    BYU
    Colorado State
    Fresno State
    Boise State
    Air Force
    Gonzaga
    St. Mary's

I think that would be a pretty darn good conference! In football It would include all the teams who routinely get screwed by the NCAA and who would be out to prove themselves. In basketball it certainly would loose some prestige, but would still be competitive. The East division would certainly be no slouch; but the West would probably be dominated by Gonzaga and St. Mary's

All in all I think this would be a really fun conference to play in. I would miss our traditional rivalries but I think we might have better opportunities in this version of the Big XII.

I'm gonna say good post here. Good thinking. That conference would not be too shabby from a competitive standpoint. I don't know that I want it but it could be much worse.

    Or so I have read.

You think Gonzaga and St. Mary's are going to leave the WCC and damn near automatic bids to the NCAA tourney? Good luck. No way Creighton wants to leave the Missouri Valley either.

Very good post. Although I think your Big 12 West division needs at least one team with experience in a BCS conference just to add balance.

Sure these schools have near automatic NCAA bids, but at what seed? Usually it is in the 7-10 range. If you are in power conference playing legit programs like Kansas your prestige will go way up. As it is now, these schools have to play brutal non-conference schedules to get any respect, otherwise they look like mid major patsies. I'm sure any of these schools would at least be tempted to further legitimize their programs by joining an expanded Big XII.

Hey, at least this one is somewhat useful and unique. Not like a certain someone's daily conference expansion thread...

I'm setting the line at 109.5. You got the over or under?

In all fairness, this is the news right now and likely will continue to be until FB picks up or this ends.

True, but I wonder who. Would a Pac 10 team want to jump ship? KU, KSU, and ISU seem like they would go together, but perhaps Baylor would be in the West.

I like creating my own conference. So much fun!

The question is... will this be a feature on the new NCAA game?

Getting killed by Kansas or Kansas State doesn't help your prestige. They'll both lose 1-2 games in the WCC and a few non-conference games and walk into the NCAA tournament. Gonzaga and St. Mary's BOTH have more respect than Iowa State currently does, and we play in a real conference. Everyone knows those programs, and everyone knows they're NCAA tournament teams year-in year-out.

Yes, sorry to contribute to the mayhem. But I am curious about whether the Big XII could survive post exodus. The actual process of deleting a BCS conference seems rather obscure, and I'm wondering if the Big XII HAS to be disbanded or if the remaining members could keep it alive in some form. Kansas, Kansas State, Baylor and Iowa State clearly want the Big XII to continue. Why not just keep it going once the greedy A-holes leave for the $$$? (not that I am bitter!)

Is the best option to go to the MWC are the leftovers of the Big East?
