AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State head track and cross country coach Corey Ihmels, who led the Iowa State women's track and field team to an all-time best fourth-place finish at the 2010 Big 12 Track and Field Championships last month in Columbia, Mo., has been named the USTFCCCA Outdoor Midwest Region Head Coach of the Year, the organization announced Friday. Ihmels, in his third year as head coach at ISU, took a record 28 male and female student-athletes to the NCAA Track and Field West Regional last weekend in Austin, Texas.

Eight Iowa State student-athletes are headed to Eugene, Ore. for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. At the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship, Ihmels' Cyclones finished 10th nationally, an all-time team best. The ISU women were sixth at the Big 12 indoor meet, the unit's best league finish since 2000.

The Iowa State women have been led by Ihmels' pupil Lisa Koll. The senior from Fort Dodge is a two-time NCAA champion and a nine-time All-American and Big 12 champion. The Cyclone NCAA women's team also includes Big 12 400-meter hurdle champion Kianna Elahi, distance runners Semehar Tesfaye and Betsy Saina and sprinter Lashawn Wright.
