Question posed by Paul Clark (CR)

Paul Clark was on KXNO earlier this hour, and he was asked how Cyclone fans would feel if they ended up in a conference like the Mountain West. He said something close to:

"I'm certainly not saying that it would be a better situation, but Cyclone fans should ask themselves this: If you could trade the fan experience of being an Iowa State fan the last 10 years for the fan experience of being a Utah fan the last 10 years, would you do it?"

I thought it was a really good question.

    Here are the records:

    IOWA STATE
    -------------------------
    2000 9-3 Insight Bowl (W)
    2001 7-5 Independence Bowl (L)
    2002 7-7 Humanitarian Bowl (L)
    2003 2-10
    2004 7-5 Independence Bowl (W)
    2005 7-5 Houston Bowl (L)
    2006 4-8
    2007 3-9
    2008 2-10
    2009 7-6 Insight Bowl (W)

    UTAH
    -------------------------
    2000 4-7
    2001 8-4 Las Vegas Bowl (W)
    2002 5-6
    2003 10-2 MWC Champs, Liberty Bowl (W)
    2004 12-0 MWC Champs, Fiesta Bowl (W)
    2005 7-5 Emerald Bowl (W)
    2006 8-5 Armed Forces Bowl (W)
    2007 9-4 Poinsettia Bowl (W)
    2008 13-0 MWC Champs, Sugar Bowl (W)
    2009 10-3 Poinsettia Bowl (W)

Re: Question posed by Paul Clark (CR)

valid point but i am concerned about the change in conference and how that would change the quality of players we get recruiting. just because we might have players that could be considered better than some Mountain West or MAC players does that mean we will continue to get them when we change conferences?

What about Basketball? I surely will take our Early 2000's success that we had.

Seems like you have to be the conference champ to get anywhere though. And even then it's a bit hit and miss.

8-5 to the Armed forces bowl? Where does 8-5 get you in the Big XII?
Isn't the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco? I watched that this year with USC - ick.

Re: Question posed by Paul Clark (CR)

I think the major issue is whether the MWC can secure a BCS bid. If they also add BSU, and can get that bid, then I see it as a positive for ISU. That conference is on the rise and with the Big12 out of the picture, it could become a major player in college football.

If the MWC also takes KU and KSU then I wouldn't mind it but probably wouldn't like it if they just added us.

Re: Question posed by Paul Clark (CR)

Unfortunately its not as simple as either of the two options. Due to all the losses we'll take from dropping to that level, we'll likely be at the same level in that conference that we were in the big 12. So id much rather be a mid-level BCS team than a mid-level mid major.

BCS conference. Only a moron would want to go to a mid-major. Who cares if you win the MAC. The WAC. Conference USA. They don't mean anything to anyone, but the school. You win a mid-major conference and go to a middle tier bowl. Whoopyyyyyyyyyy.

But other than those two lightning in a bottle years, ISU really has never done anything big on a national level.

Re: Question posed by Paul Clark (CR)

I think it's a real faulty assumption to think that we'll automatically dominate whichever mid-tier conference we might end up in. First off, victories against those mid-tier conferences have been hard to come by over the years in the first place. Second, those struggles came with better players than those schools had. Are we really going to dominate when we no longer have access to the level of athlete we are able to get right now?

Honestly, I'd rather be mediocre in a big, revenue-generating league, simply because I think it's absolutely naive to think we'd be anything but mediocre in a mid-tier league as well.

I would rather be a little fish in the big pond than the big fish in the little pond. In other words I would rather be in the big conference rather than a mid major.

Utah has been a very good basketball program for quite a while. Those Majerus years were pretty unreal. He was just a small step behind Tom Izzo for very high consistency.

Re: Question posed by Paul Clark (CR)

My fear is that we would drop down to be a mid-level team in a 2nd tier conference, which gets you no where most years.

In a conference like that, you'll need to be 8-4 to go to a bowl. The other question is where do we recruit from in the future? If we're in the MWC, we aren't going to be very attractive to west coast kids. We'll lose much of our appeal from TX athletes.

Some of those schools like Boise State have had some success due in large part to taking kids that are not able to get into Pac 10 schools. We wouldn't be able to compete with them at ease of admissions. To be fair, BYU and Utah haven't gone that route.

Re: Question posed by Paul Clark (CR)

Dropping to a non-bcs conference, especially a geographically scattered conference (MWC) or a crap conference (MAC) will be the first of many nails in the coffin. Merchandise, recruiting, and fan interest outside of a 2 hour drive from Ames will drop like a rock. I love my school and my teams, but I am not going to hump a 71/2 hour round trip each weekend to watch MWC or MAC quality teams every weekend. PAC 10 taking us vs. TTech or OKState would make more sense, they already have the TV sets in Oklahoma and Texas, why not add another 3 million from Iowa and cut into the big 10 geography a bit?
