Help with food places in Madison, WI.

Hey guys. I am working a couple University of Wisconsin basketball camps this summer. When I travel, I like to find different places to eat that aren't chain restaurants. I will be up in the Madison twice this summer and was wondering if there are any locals on this board or if any one knows of good places to eat. I checked out Google and Mapquest. I was wondering if any one had any suggestions on any good places to go. I'm a big BBQ guy.

Thanks for any suggestions in advance, its greatly appreciated.

I always like State Street Brats. There's a little hole in the wall pizza place down from State Street Brats that has some great pizza too.

We've eaten at Great Dane a couple times, once downtown in the Capital area, other time bit out west near the hospital.

Downtown was much, much better for whatever reason. But I recommend it. They have their own brews - the "expanded" sampler had something like 18 beers on it. Pretty much all I needed. Dinner was great.

We also did a Sunday morning breakfast at the Orpheum theater downtown. Nothing particularly special for brunch, but neat place.

I was there for the first time recently and ate at the Great Dane and the Old Fashioned. Both were terrific.

Mikey's Dairy Bar - near camp Randall. Old school mom & pop eatery w/ a phenomenal breakfast for cheap.

Lots and lots of other Interesing choices as the city of MAdison isn't real nice to chains.

Ian's pizza has pizza by the slice - w/ convetional flavors as well as uniquely Midwestern like "mashed potato pizza" and "macaroni & cheese pizza"

Oakcrest (not dwntwn) is a mom n pop burger joint on near west side. Great burgers. The place is the size of a cracker box.

I'll post more as I think about them...

Great Dane is a must--would recommend the downtown location as well.

echo Great Dane downtown version. (there is a waitress I get every time that makes me smile )

Brocach on the South side of the Capital Building is a good Irish place.

Essen Haus on the SE side of downtown is a good stop as well.

For an award winning burger check out Dotty Dumpling's Dowry in the capital area of Madison. Its owned by a DSM Roosevelt grad "Jeff Stanley" and has been around for more then 25 years.

Best BBQ in town is Smoky Jons Welcome
Also like Marigold (breakfast), Liliana's (cajun), Edo (Japanese), Paisan's (American Italian)...

There aren't many places in town that you'd feel uncomfortable wearing jeans.

Great place to explore. If you're adventurous, check out Porn in the Morn at Bennett's.
