Days away from my first smart phone

Likely buying the HTC/Droid Incredible through Verizon. Very much looking forward to it.

I have not renewed a cell phone contract or bought new phones in 3+ years. So my question is this...what's the difference between going to a Verizon store versus going to a private/local cellular store (they typically work with multiple cell carriers) versus going through Verizon's web site?

I should add that we also qualify for corporate discounts so we would want those applied as well.

Are the corporate discounts already applied to your account? If so, then it shouldn't matter where you go. If they are not yet applied, you may have to go through the website/verizon store to get them applied, but after that you could go anywhere. Also, you probably already know this, but smartphones require a minimum 29.99 per month, per phone data plan. And lastly, the HTC Incredible is backordered pretty much anywhere. It might take as long as 3 weeks to get it after you order it.

Nice, you are in the same situation as I was a couple months ago. Never bothered getting into the rat race of phone upgrades. Now have a Droid Eris and don't know how I lived without it!

agree. It's corny to say, but a smartphone will change your life. I've had one for about two years now, and I think back to the days before I made the switch and wonder how I ever managed to get by.

Re: Days away from my first smart phone

Congrats on the decision to get an Incredible. I've been loving my Eris for about 6 months now after 7-8 years of Blackberries. I was just at the Verizon store (getting texting blocked as I have random incoming texts and no text plan). It was hard to resist checking out the Incredible in person as I have a long was to go before I can upgrade and I shouldn't be paying the $500-600 full price which I am sure I would be tempted to do if I handled one.

I was aware of the data plan and backorder issue with the Incredible. My wife just started a new job and they are transitioning their technology (possibly to iPhones or iPads), so I'm pressing her to get an idea of where that's going before I lock us into a new contract.

Of course, there are rumors of new Verizon smart phones coming soon so if they make an announcement perhaps I'll just hold out for a few more weeks.

I'd love a smartphone but I don't want to pay for a data plan or anything. Also, I just got my first mobile phone about 5 years ago (when I was 24). I think I was just about the last person to do so in my age group.

They are always doing that though. You can always hold out for a couple weeks it seems like. I know when I went with the Devour they were telling me to wait on the incredible. Well, it's two months later and I still wouldn't have gotten the incredible yet. TO top it off there are rumors they will be coming with something new. I am just fine with my Devour. It does everything I need it to.

I think I got one when I was 16 and my cousin has one now and he is 11. How times have changed.

I don't know what you do for a living but a smartphone can be very useful. I know mine is great because I don't ever have to stop into the office if I don't want to. It would cost me 2-3 hours a day if I had to come into the office 2 or 3 times a day to check email.

Oh, I agree. What I'm saying is that I'm in a bit of a holding pattern anyway (hopefully only for a few days) and even if I committed to the Incredible tomorrow it's probably 3+ weeks before I get it. But if they announce a new phone coming out in a month that I could pre-order and be guaranteed to get it right away at that time, it's basically a wash so getting the latest and greatest really doesn't cost me much extra time.

Yeah, i think this Incredible thing is going to cost them some. They will likely lose at least a months worth of incredible sales. I suppose they will still sell the phones and won't lose much money but I kind of thought they were going to make the Incredible into a more than just one phone. That will be set back now.

Re: Days away from my first smart phone

I'm still trying to hold on to my sprint sero plan $30/month, for 500 minute +unlimited data/text which is all I need. Unfortunately they don't have any android phone for this plan. So I just installed android eclair in my touch pro 2, and I like it overall, except the battery life kinda sucks. I'm tempted though to get the EVO 4G, but then I have to change my plan to the $60/month.
