Phil Steele picks us dead last in North

Just heard Miller and Deace talking about it. I'll be picking my copy up later this week, as I do enjoy the magazine, apparently he thinks we're more talented, but gives the schedule excuse (he does have us as the #1 toughest schedule in the nation).

I still don't see how that puts us below CU, KU, and KSU though. If we beat those teams, we aren't last, and possibly going to a bowl. For yet another year, he apparently has CU in his most improved teams list, just like last year.

I've looked back at his predictions from last year, and he really wasn't as accurate as he claims to be, at least last year. I'm starting to wonder if Phil has jumped the shark a little bit. I'm not saying that he should be picking ISU to win the North, or anything like that, but why are we last behind CU and KU? I just don't get that part of the equation.

I guess I'm just hoping his ISU prediction is about as accurate as it was a year ago.

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.

Don't get too bent out of shape over speculation. It's partially what they're paid for.
I'm hopeful that we have another good year and go to another bowl. But if someone says that we're gonna suck and finish dead last, hey it's their opinion; they're entitled to it.

I havent looked at the schedules of any of the others but ours isnt fun. I also would be very surprised if we even won against all three of those mentioned earlier (CU, KU and KSt). I also think about everyone in the # of Wins thread is drunk on Koolaid. I'm looking forward to the year but I'm afraid its going to be a rough one.

Phil Steele sucks. We're going to win 6 games at least.

At face value we lose the strongest parts of an already weak D and pick up Texas, OU, & Tech.

I'm guessing he's counting those 3 as losses plus Mizzou/NU.

We would then HAVE to beat KSU, KU, & CU not to be last in his most likely scenarios. I think we have a decent shot against Tech, Mizzou, and Neb. at home which he probably isn't taking into account.

There is not going to be a lot of difference between ISU, KU, KSU and CU next year in terms of talent. Someone has to be picked last, and remember that ISU lost to KU and KSU last year, and was in a dog fight with CU. CU also had a lot of injuries last year, so they may actually be better this year.

This...I would say even odds between those 4 teams for who gets 6th in the North.

He also picked Nebraska and OU to both go undefeated (yes, you read that correctly, NU undefeated) and play in the Big XII champ game, with OU winning and advancing to the BCS title game. Projected NU to the Fiesta Bowl.

Picked OSU to win the Big 11, with Iowa and Penn St tying for 2nd, and Wisky coming in 4th.

Nothing but more bulletin board material IMO

Win or lose, I'm just pumped that we'll be seeing a competitive football team with a competent coach for the 2nd year in a row. Can't freaking wait

one winning season and everyone forgets about the previous two

i'm not saying we can't win 6+ games, but those of you expecting it are nuts, especially with the schedule we have.

Out of curiosity, when was the last time ISU beat all 3 of those teams (KU, KSU, and CU) in the same season?

My only worry is the back-to-back games in Austin and Norman, I know this will be different than in McCarney days, but those are two tough games in a row.

Re: Phil Steele picks us dead last in North

    Not surprised at all.

    A) We have the toughest schedule in the Nation. KU will be playing Baylor, OSU, and TAM while we get Texas, OU, and Tech.

    B) We were (+) on TO's last year. If you read his magazine,
Turnovers = Turnaround. That means that if you were (-) on turnonver last year, you could expect an improvement there that will help your final record.

    C) This is probably the biggest reason for the poor prediction: Our offensive and defensive rankings were very poor last year. The team over-achieved by making plays when they needed to. ISU got killed on yards per game (both the Offense and Defense).

Cyclone Fans need to understand that Phil is wrong alot of the time. He picked Mississippi to win the SEC WEST over eventual National Champion Alabama. Also, he picked Colorado to finish 2nd in the North last year.
