    CR area folks

I have a hard drive that i think might be bad. Which sucks, because all our pictures and stuff are on it. Does anyone here have a recommendation for a place to take it to see if they can get the data off it?

I'm pretty sure the geek squad can do it.

Run Recuva yourself: Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download

I wasn't aware that they were evil, my wife took one of her computers there that had a bunch of pictures on it and they were able to retrieve the info. I would have rather taken it to a local business but it was the first week we lived in the town. It took 2 days longer than they said but otherwise no problem.

    Re: CR area folks

I recently took my computer to the Geek Squad and they found my hard drive was screwed up and installed a new one.

I think I lucked out, however, that all that needed to be done was running diagnostics and installing a new hard drive...the two things they know how to do there.

I am pretty sure there is something wrong with some of the hardware in the drive itself. I think it probably needs to go to someone a little more competent than the geek squad.

That happened to us too. We took it too a company here in Des Moines who I was told could retrieve the pics if anyone could. They couldn't get the info from the drive because of a hardware issue. He said to keep the hard drive in case there was new technology but as of 1 1/2 yrs ago, it wasn't happening.

Good luck and let me know if you find something. My wife would love to get the family pictures we lost.

Are you hearing clicking sounds or what? If so, it may be cheaper just to get a new drive and try to recover your stuff instead of paying money to investigate a lost cause.

Run the program I linked. If that doesn't work toss the HD in the freezer for awhile and try again.

    Re: CR area folks

There's a place on Blairsferry just north of Rockwell Collins that I've gone to before and thought was good service. They'll look at it and give you a synopsis of what's wrong with it for free. I can't remember the name of it but it's in the same little strip building as 3rd base brewing company or cedar river brewing company (whatever it is now :) ). Just to the west of C ave.

Yeah, it's making a clicking sound. I'd be happy just getting it running long enough to get the stuff off it.

I took it apart, the little arm that picks up the data off the drive doesn't appear to be working right, it is stuck to the outside of the drive.

I tried the HD in the freezer on two occations and it didn't work either time. In theory it looks good, but it just didn't work for me. Sure worth a try though.

Why do you say that? Obviously any warranty would be voided, but someone should still be able to get the discs themselves and get the data back, assuming they aren't damaged.

Yeah pretty much a shot in the dark.
