CBS Sports: Big 12 Might Lack Muscle With Regards To Expansion

A very interesting ready by Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports with regards to the Big 12 being "between a rock and a hard place" when it comes to all the expansion talk:

Seeking resolution, Big 12 might lack the muscle to get it - NCAA Football - CBSSports.com

Re: CBS Sports: Big 12 Might Lack Muscle With Regards To Expansion

Remember research dollars and academic tradition are also going to play big roles in Big Ten expansion.

Why do you think the Big 8 joined with TX, TX A&M, TX Tech, and Baylor? I think (not for sure) that these shools were the top four research institutions from the old SWC. Their football programs at the start of the Big 12 era were just average. Since then, a lot of money has been funneled to these schools, and not just TV revenue, but mega research bucks as well. Research grants are the lifeblood of any top notch university. The Big 12 conference has been "veddy, veddy goot" for the Texas schools. Why derail a gravy train when you're on it?

    Another interesting expansion article:

Texas athletic director says it's not disloyal to Big 12 to listen to expansion talk - KansasCity.com

I think it is very telling that DeLoss Dodds (Texas AD) went from having a stance of "We're in the Big 12 and we're staying there" in initial press conferences when asked about expansion, to his stance now, where he is saying "We like the Big 12, but we have to do what is best for Texas."

I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that Texas will be out of the Big 12 within 5 years. They will either go to the PAC 10, Big 10, or go Indy.

In the end you can thank the Big 12 for bending over for Texas and Oklahoma.

and you can thank Texas and OU for allowing ISU to still have a TV contract with the conference...it works both ways. The problem is the rest of the conference save MU, NU, and CU who may have outs is that the rest of the conference need OU and Texas more than they need the rest of this particular conference.

Yeah, I am thanking my lucky stars for our TV contract.

I'll take your bet. I just can't see Texas flying all of their teams two or three time zones away for games. It's just not practical for athletic program with as much clout as theirs. Geography is a factor that's underrated.

I will bet you as much money as you want to put on the line. Literally. Name an amount and we'll figure out a way to get it hashed out.

Now that MBB is back, do we still have to pretend that WBB matters?

With everything going on, it would be not only foolish but negligent for Texas to not consider its options. Doesn't mean it will happen.

In the Big Ten Texas would be in the same time zone as nearly half the member schools, the other schools would only be one hour ahead. Time zone change wouldn't be an issue in the Big Ten for Texas, which is why it seems more likely to me that they would end up in the Big Ten than in the PAC 10.
