Cashner to bigs Grabow to DL

Via Bruce Levine at ESPNChicago.com. Andrew Cashner will replace John Grabow, whose knee problems have made him completely ineffective.
Cashner will have to be added to the 40-man roster, which is currently full. The most logical move would be putting Angel Guzman on the 60-day DL (60-day DL guys don't count against the 40-man roster limit).

Guzman isn't on the 60-day DL? I thought he was basically out for the year..

Re: Cashner to bigs Grabow to DL

About time. Colvin, Castro, Cashner and maybe even Vitters need to be mainstays in the lineup before the end of this year. If the Cubs were smart, they'd find a way to part with some of the ridiculous contracts (Zambrano, Soriano) and get younger and free up payroll going into next season.

Problem is, no team in their right mind will take on all of Z's or Soriano's contracts. We're more than likely going to have to pick up some of the contract and get pennies on the dollar for those guys.

How exactly is Vitters going to be a mainstay in the lineup this year? Ramirez isn't exactly going anywhere and his trade value has never been lower.

And good luck getting rid of Z and Soriano - huge, back-loaded contracts with full NTC.

Hendry has really painted this team into a corner. Fortunately there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel with all of the young talent currently up and coming up.

Thank god. I don't even feel confortable having Grabow come into a game with a 5-run lead. He has been horrible this year!

Well, if Lou is still managing at the end of this year, there's no way in hell Vitters will get a shot, because Lou has no interest in getting the youth into the line up. If the Cubs are out of it come September, I think you have to let youth be served. If Ramirez's slump continues, why not give Vitters a shot? See what he's made of and groom him for the future.

I do agree about the contracts of Z and Soriano. Best case scenario, a team like the Yankees or Red Sox comes sniffing around and takes on more of those contracts than a team like Texas or the Dodgers would.

Frankly, at this point, I just hope that the Cubs try something different. Soriano, Lee, Ramirez and Zambrano are all aging and that nucleus will keep you competitive, but as we've seen, it's not going to get you far in the playoffs and it's not going to get you a ring. If there's a way to shop those guys and bring in young talent, I say go for it.

I'll be interested in seeing how long it takes Pinella to move Ramirez down in the order...we're two months into the season and he is hitting .164. For the love of god, take him out of the cleanup spot PLEASE, and get somebody that is a good hitter some more rbi opportunities.

Lee and Ramirez have got to be moved down. In fact, I'd rather see Ramirez go to the 15 day DL. Let Tracy or Fontenot have 3B for a while. Move Lee down to 6 or 7. Nady can play 1B, right? Give DLee a few days off too.
