MBB Class given a B+ according to ESPN

Former Iowa State legend and NBA player Fred Hoiberg returned home to Ames as head coach after Greg McDermott left for Creighton and has a nice group to work with during his first season. Melvin Ejim (Ontario, Can./ Brewster Academy) is an athletic small forward and DeMarcus Phillips (Milwaukee, Wis./ Marshalltown Community College) is a combination guard that will get an early look due to his ability to create and score. Add in three power forwards -- Jordan Railey (Beaverton, Ore./ Beaverton), Eric McKnight (Raleigh, N.C./ Princeton Day Academy) and Calvin Godfrey (Robbinsdale, Minn./Robbinsdale) -- and the Cyclones instantly improve. All three are about 6-9, athletic and above-the-rim finishers who can rebound.
Pretty solid rating I'd say. Tied for fifth in the conference with OU and Oklahoma State.

    Just for comparison's sake, Iowa's was given a C+.

We aren't even done recruiting for this year are we??? I still think we can add a JUCO or someone who will step in and play this season.

"Freddie knows the game," Bird said. "I'm sure he picked up a lot of stuff over the years from different people. College is different from the NBA, but I'm sure he'll do a great job."

My guess is that we will only add another body if it is a transfer.

Pretty good, and that's not including Darion Anderson.

Great until you realize that pretty much all he will have is this recruiting class...

But this recruiting class is decent at least. We may have some growing pains but once we add another class we will be greatly improved.

Re: MBB Class given a B+ according to ESPN

I think the key to this recruiting class is going to be retaining the guys that don't end up making the starting rotation. One of the biggest problems Mac had was keeping those second/third string guys on board. It is easy to bring a lot of players in each year with the promise of playing time, but they can't all be starters.
We need that next tier of player to stick with the program for 4 years for the sake of continuity in the program. It would be nice to see a player work his way into the starting lineup after 2-3 years instead of always relying on bringing in a new player to fill a hole.

It's one problem, but plenty of starters left, too..........

I think this is a legit ranking and assessment of the recruiting class; even though it is essentially Mac's recruits or rather should say TJ's. AND it doesn't include Anderson or Babb or White or anyone else we add over the summer.

Give Mac a little credit here. He left a lot better class for Fred than what he got when he started.

Glad to see it ranked that well. We're going to need the freshman to over achieve in order to do well.

How about credit for the incoming guys, but blame for the general instability that led to such a situation?

Either way, I still feel like the future is looking bright. Time to buy some shades.

I was going to same the same thing. Its hard to build for the future (2-4 years out) with 9-13 guys leaving after a year, but Mac was also losing starters and key reserves each year which make it hard in the short term also. Hopefully that trend stops!!!
