    New Volcano Threat

    This could get really interesting.

2nd Iceland volcano issues ominous warning - Europe- msnbc.com

Big volcano eruptions in the Northern Latitudes usually mean hot and dry summers in the midwest.

ISU extension is saying a 20% chance of a drought this year. Similar to 1983. I think its a El Nino, but I can't remember. Either way, these volcanos don't help things.

I think they said that whenever that smaller volcano in Iceland goes off the larger one goes off as well. So I'm guessing this isn't a gigantic surprise to the geologist community.

I one year drought in Iowa wouldn't be that big a deal. We are already pretty wet, so the impact wouldn't be huge.

Now if it were a multi-year drought, thats when things really become a problem.

El Nino is kaput, we're in a neutral area right now . Some things point towards a La Nina though.

For some reason, R.E.M.'s "It's the end of the world as we know it" keeps playing in my mind after reading this.

The Ol' timers (I'm getting there) will tell you that last fall and this spring are VERY similar to '82/'83 and that's without the volcanoes help. Things could get really interesting if Europe takes a hit and the corn belt goes dry for more than one growing season.

without knowing anything about the direction of el nino/la nina or volcanoes, I think this is going to be a hot/dry summer. just call it a gut feeling. May has been dryer than usual where i live comparing to the past 8-10 Mays.

And we're due - has been cool and wet the past several summers.

Would agree. I also remember the spring of 88 being beautiful in Ames with lot's of gals tanning in bikinis. It was a really warm April and May much like this year.
