    Just Nuke It

Maybe the leak is plugged, but there is always one more solution.

Nuke the Gulf Oil Gusher, Russians Suggest | LiveScience

The Russians previously used nukes at least five times to seal off gas well fires. A targeted nuclear explosion might similarly help seal off the oil well channel that has leaked oil unchecked since the sinking of a BP oil rig on April 22, according to a translation of the account in the daily newspaper Komsomoloskaya Pravda by Julia Ioffe of the news website True/Slant.

Let's start with the Russians. According to Vladimir Lagovsky of Komsomolskaya Pravda (once a Soviet communist paper), "In the USSR, a few such leaks were plugged with the help of the peaceful atom." Five leaks, all underground, were plugged thusly, the paper says—starting with a 1966 natural gas fissure in Uzbekistan. That one was snuffed using a 30-megatonkiloton blast six kilometers deep—about one and a half times the size of the Hiroshima bomb. "The idea of the method is simple," Lagovsky writes. "An underground explosion pushes the rock, compresses it, and actually squeezes the channel well shut."

Im not a chemist or a marine biologist (or a tree hugger) but what affect would this have on the the environment. Couldnt be a whole lot worse than an Ocean full of oil but to the effects last longer?

I kinda like the idea, lets use some of this technology for something good!

Interesting idea. Agree with AGR - not sure which is worse.

Wonder if you'd need an explosion as big as the Russian guy stated. 1.5 x Hiroshima? To fill a hole in the ground? Plus this one isn't that deep is it? I thought only a mile or two. The one they referenced was 6? Edit: Sorry - 6 km deep. So closer to the same.

Maybe the Russians were compensating for something

IMO no. The blast is well underground. You'd think radation exposure would be minimal.
