Just did a little math regarding MBB scholarships

According to a little math work that I just did, Iowa State has six available scholarships to give out in the class of 2011.

With the commitments of Elgin Cook and Anthony Odunsi, that number decreases to four.

Two seniors (Christopherson and Phillips) are set to leave the program after the 2011-12 season, which would leave two available scholarships for the class of 2012.

Hopefully we can apply some Preparation Hoiberg, stop the player hemorrhaging and this number goes down, rather than up.

Chris, what's your best guesstimation on how many we'll use in 11?
To me 5 would seem like the max leaving 3 plus any attrition schollies for 12.

Re: Just did a little math regarding MBB scholarships

I think we need 4 for 2012. So I would like to see us use 2-3 next year and someone will transfer (it's the way it works for every college now) and 3-4 for the 2012 class.

Nobody but HB knows for sure. You pretty much know nothing....like Knownothing would like to say.

That's why I asked Chris because your answer is horrible!
    2 or 3??????????????
Cook, Odunsi and top priority Uthoff.
That would leave us with 3 post players 3 SF and 5 guards including Bubu for 2011-12.

Depends. Next year I don't beleive that we have a single scholarship sophomore on the roster.

Re: Just did a little math regarding MBB scholarships

Isn't there a limit in how many you can fill in a single year?

And what's the likelihood we get some suspended due to all the transfers?

Re: Just did a little math regarding MBB scholarships

For 2011 we need to get Cook, Udonsi, Uthoff, another guard, and another big

That will leave us with 3 scholarships going into 2012 (which will probably be 4 or 5 depending on transfers)

Babb will be in that class a year from now and that schollie
has to be reserved for Jok.

Uthoff, Paige and Jok would be a three year trifecta.

Re: Just did a little math regarding MBB scholarships

I've said for awhile that I think that they go after Uthoff and then two JUCOs...a PG and a big. Bank the other one or give it to Palo or find a one year player like Anderson. That would make for a pretty good team in 2011 AND balance out the classes a little. That would mean:

    SR: Christopherson, Phillips
JR: Babb, JC PG, JC C
SO: Palo, McKnight, Ejim, Godfrey, Railey
FR: Uthoff, Cook, Odunsi (and maybe one of the bigs in the Soph class redshirts)

Two scholarships in 2012 should be enough if they can get Staten and Gessell. Then there are three scholarships open in 2013 so they can go after Jok and a few more guys.

Re: Just did a little math regarding MBB scholarships

I'm also wondering whether all these transfers will cost us scholarships due to a low APR. I curious whether some of the players like Dendy and Pomlee left with OK academics.

Yes but isn't there an exception to that for players that leave due to coaching change?

    The 5/8 rule is gonzo.

APR will be in question, if it comes up I suspect we'll go the same route as when McDermott got here and take the losses early when the scholarships would've been extremely difficult to fill with a quality player anyway.

I hope we never see either in a Cyclone uniform. Staten has huge attitude issues and he's kind of known as a dick around the AAU circuit, and Gessell doesn't have the size. I'm guessing he'll be a Blue Jay when all is said and done.

Additionally, taking 2 guards and no big men is damn risky. You'd like to have them spread out so if your 2 upperclassmen get hurt or in trouble, etc. you don't have to go straight to a freshman.
