    Revenge against un-neighborly neighbors?

I have two neighbors that have a lot of loud gatherings on weekends. They're usually out on the patio in back or in their driveways with a fire pit. Not huge gatherings, but maybe up to 10-12 people and sometimes they go on as late as 3 a.m.

They tend to be pretty inconsiderate about the amount of noise they make. Once, they turned on the flood lights in their front yard around midnight to play ladder golf. Lots of loud conversation, laughter, and often even outright yelling.

I don't want to be the fun-hater, but we've got young kids who often get us up early in the morning, which means if we want a good night's sleep we can't afford to stay up late. And I don't think it's unreasonable to expect not to have to hear our neighbor's party loud and clear even with our windows shut at the AC on.

We've expressed some displeasure before (to no avail, obviously) and aside from this, we're on friendly terms so I'm hesitant to call the police as I'm sure they'll know it was us. So I'm trying to figure out how to handle this.

Both sets of neighbors are ardent Hawk fans, by the way. Not that it's at all central to the issue at hand.

Definitely considered that. That punishes everyone else in the neighborhood though too, so I was hoping for a more targeted approach.

    That would be funny.

    or

It seems like a good enough relationship where you could just go and talk to them. Be honest with them and tell the to keep it down a bit so you can get your much needed sleep. If they give you a hard time about it or keep up with the partying, be a ****.

Why not when your kids wake you early go outside and make a lot of noise. Since they were up late I am sure this will not make them happy. Mow your lawn, run a weed wacker or a leaf blower. Play on the side of the house that borders them, get the kids all crazy so they really are loud. If they complain, get louder. Maybe they will get the hint.

    Re: Revenge against un-neighborly neighbors?

Have you tried just telling them you want them to keep it down? Would at least be better than calling the cops because you would instantly lose your man-card if you did that.

Usually I have been on the other end of these things, but one time in an apartment I lived in (not in a college town) the d-bags below me were up screaming at each other constantly til like 5 AM on weeknights (they couldn't hold their liquor, they drank like high schoolers and would get in fights with each other every time). I tried banging on their door and yelling at them to Shut the **** Up, that would quite them down for a little bit but then they'd start again. So I came up with a new plan, and every time they woke me up when I got up around 6 AM for work I would put on work boots and jump all around my apartment as hard as I could, enough to shake their entire apartment every morning and wake them up. That helped, but they finally shut up real well when the neighbor across from them, who was about a 300 LB. African American dude threatened to break the guys nose.

History Channel had some show on modern police weapons awhile back; there was a focused sound beam they used to send unruly crowds running. Borrow one from the Ankeny PD and dust 'em the next time they're loud at 2am...

    Re: Revenge against un-neighborly neighbors?

In the past we have had a gathering and it ran kind of late. I have a friend that gets really loud when drinking so our neighbors had enough. The turned their garage lights on and off like 4 times. I got the hint that we were loud so we turned the party indoors. The next day I apologized when I saw him and that was the end of it. He told me that sometime I might have to do the same to him and not to worry. I just thought it was a clever way to get the point across without having a face to face in the heat of the moment.

After they party, if they are ever drunk enough and forget to clean up their bags before passing out, go over there and pee on all of the bags. Joke's on them from that point on.

    Good point.

They have a few real small yippy dogs too. Anyone got experience with dog whistles? I wondered if maybe I could make their dogs freak out. (Or shut up, which would also be helpful since they're quite annoying.)

there is a detective that runs his floods on all night directly into my neighbors bedroom lights. I have no idea if I would shoot out his floods with a bb gun- but I know I would tell him to angle them down a LOT!

In your case, I would talk to him- people become more considerate when they are aware that building materials dont block as much sound as they used to!

My wife did just that to one of the neighbors across the street last fall and she's been getting the stink eye from them ever since.

If it were just an occasional thing, I could live with it. But it's every weekend.

    Re: Revenge against un-neighborly neighbors?

I think it's a pretty crappy neighbor that has parties outside until 2am on a regular basis. I think you have every right to call the police.

If my neighbor did this I would be waking up a 5am and turning my subwoofer up to 11. If it can knock a lamp off the table I have a pretty good feeling it will wake them up.

Or maybe somehow record their party and then play it back on some external speakers. Most Hawk fans like to hear themselves talk so you'll be doing them a favor.
