Talking your way out of speeding ticket...

Was speeding down a 2 lane highway in NE Washington when I was pulled over (75-ish in a 60). He asked why I was going so fast and I answered - honestly - I was listening to Michael Savage and was getting so angry that I lost track of my speed. He smiled, handed me back my license, and told me to take it easy.

Other tales of getting out of speeding tickets?

The two times I've gotten out of one, I honestly admitted to the cop I wasn't paying attention. One time I was on my way to tailgate up at JTS. He said "Go Cyclones" - I'm sure I would have been behind bars if I had Hawkeye gear on!

Re: Talking your way out of speeding ticket...

A police officer pulls a guy over for speeding and has the following exchange:

Officer: May I see your driver's license?
Driver: I don't have one. I had it suspended when I got my 5th DUI.

Officer: May I see the owner's card for this vehicle?
Driver: It's not my car. I stole it.

    Officer: The car is stolen?
Driver: That's right. But come to think of it, I think I saw the owner's card in the glove box when I was putting my gun in there.

Officer: There's a gun in the glove box?
Driver: Yes sir. That's where I put it after I shot and killed the woman who owns this car and stuffed her in the trunk.

Officer: There's a BODY in the TRUNK?!?!?
    Driver: Yes, sir.

Hearing this, the officer immediately called his captain. The car was quickly surrounded by police, and the captain approached the driver to handle the tense situation:

Captain: Sir, can I see your license?
    Driver: Sure. Here it is.

    It was valid.

    Captain: Who's car is this?
Driver: It's mine, officer. Here's the owner's card.

    The driver owned the car.

Captain: Could you slowly open your glove box so I can see if there's a gun in it?
Driver: Yes, sir, but there's no gun in it.

Sure enough, there was nothing in the glove box.

Captain: Would you mind opening your trunk? I was told you said there's a body in it.
    Driver: No problem.

    Trunk is opened; no body.

Captain: I don't understand it. The officer who stopped you said you told him you didn't have a license, stole the car, had a gun in the glovebox, and that there was a dead body in the trunk.

Driver: Yeah, I'll bet the lying s.o.b. told you I was speeding, too!

would never work since police have those dash cams with the mic on their person, but funny.

Re: Talking your way out of speeding ticket...

The only thing I've gotten out of was on the campus of SFA. I made a rather extreme lane change as a car pulled out into my lane. There was plenty of space and I could have slowed down easy enough. Cop lit me up. Just told him like it was: I was tired, just got off work, my cell beeped, looked up and a car was entering. He gave me a quick lecture but then handed my back my license and let me head home.

Re: Talking your way out of speeding ticket...

I've rarely gotten out of tickets and got quite a few back in the day (clean record the last few years though, knock on wood), but i do have one time i did get out of one.

It was late at night, and a party had wound down at our place (luckily i wasnt drinking that night). I was either driving a group of mostly underage and drunk friends home or to perkins (cant remember which it was), and i go down mortenson, past the middle school which had just recently been dropped from 40 to 25 thanks to that new middle school being put in there (why that isnt just 25 during certain times, like it would be everywhere else, i dont know...) . I got pulled over going 40ish, and was looking forward to another pricey ticket.

Whether due to it being late at night and prime drunk-hunting time, or he mightve smelled the alcohol on everyone else in the car, it meant i was asked out of the car to do a field sobriety test and take a breathalyzer. Blew .000, and the cop let me go without a ticket and a 'thank you for being a DD'.

Re: Talking your way out of speeding ticket...

I was in Louisville, KY in November for a seminar. I was on the Interstate bridge crossing the Ohio River and as soon as we crossed from KY to IN there was an officer standing in the middle of the left lane motioning me to the side. He indicated I was going 74 in a 55 and asked why.

I told him I'd been in Church Safety and Security Seminar the past three days, it was rush hour and I was trying to clear the metro because I had a long drive to that night's hotel. My thinking, no reason to make excuses; I'm 19 over and dead meat! He says, "do you have anything to prove you were in a Church seminar?" I reach into my back seat and pull out the three-ring binder. He says, "I can't let you go with nothing, but I'll make it a $25 seat belt violation that doesn't go on your record".

I now keep that church seminar binder in my car at all times....

I just say "sir" a lot. Some of them have short man syndrome so if you give them a lot of respect they may not give you a ticket.

Re: Talking your way out of speeding ticket...

    True story.

Driving back from a concert in Minneapolis 4-5 years ago we got pulled over on I-35 S on our way back to Ames. It was about 2:30 in the morning and my roommate got pulled over doing about 85 mph. The cop comes up to the car and asks my roommate why he was going so fast. My roommate responds, "just trying to keep up with the flow of traffic." The cop looks around and says, "there isn't another car on the road." My roommate looks at him with no smile on his face and says, "I know, I fell behind and am trying to catch up." The cop laughed, handed him his license, and told him to take it easy.

I have a friend that used to drive very fast and crazy just because he could...he once got out of a ticket because he was wearing his boy scout uniform and another time because a friend left his student government stuff in his car and he said he was late for a meeting...however he has gotten numerous tickets and now drives the speed limit.

Are boy scouts old enough to drive?
