    Larder Beatles

Any Entomoligists out there know anything about these bugs. From my research on the web, I'm pretty sure this is what I have in my kitchen. It's a small bug (about 3/8" long) and is black with a brown stripe in the middle. The research I did said I likely got them from my dry cat food in the basement, and I will now put that in an air tight container. My question is, Has anyone else ever had these bugs, or does any one know how to get rid of these dang things?

You are right on. We get these, too, and it's likely due to the cat food in our basement, too. Putting it in an airtight container should work. Maybe bug-bomb your basement to get any that are alive now, and if their food source is "locked away" there shouldn't be any new ones that can live.

Forever trying to find a cure for the Dunning-Kruger Effect.

The problem is, most of them I see are in my kitchen, so I would like to stay away from bug bombing if possible. I was hoping for a bait, or inside freindly spray I could use.

    Re: Larder Beatles

Whoa. The entomologist has been on vacation and neglecting CF. Sorry.

While cat food and dried foods can be a source, people often overlook furs and leather. And, don't forget that they also feed on other dead insects. My folks live on a farm and raised hogs - - flies were abundant. Larder beetles could be a problem in the house when they got done with the flies that were most likely up in the attic.

From my perspective, sanitation is key. I'm hard pressed to recommend insecticides be applied inside one's house - especially an insect like this. I know many people are not fond of this advice ... but the vacuum cleaner can be a wonderful thing.
