    Disc golf driver

This is for all of you disc golfers out there....

I'm currently looking to make some upgrades to my disc collection. I need a good putter, something that is pretty reliable. Also, I'm looking for a new driver. Right now I;m using a Champion Orc for most of my long range drives occasionally I pull out my Star Beast. Both are around 170 g. Im thinking of trying a lower weight to get more distance, any suggestions?

    Re: Disc golf driver

It's been awhile for me, but I believe I have a Starfire that has worked well with the Star plastic.

Also, my putter is the Aviar, but in regular plastic.

    Re: Disc golf driver

    I use:

    Innova Champion Discs - Destroyer

    or

    Innova Champion Discs - Wraith

The destroyer is better if you got a bit of wind to deal with, the wraith is nice when it is calm. You can get the Destroyer in 168-175 and the Wraith in 165-175.

    Re: Disc golf driver

I have 2 drivers and they are both the best I have ever used (used to use the orc and beast).
    Innova Champion Groove
    Innova Champion Boss
They fly long, straight, good for backhand and/or forehand, also good in wind.
    Innova Champion Discs - Groove
    Innova Champion Discs - Boss

    Re: Disc golf driver

I've heard of this sport, but never seen it until a special on it on mediacom connections tonight. It's looks cool and I'd probably be better at this than regular golf. Where do you find these discs (I'm assuming most of the major stores have them) and what are prices like? Also are there any disc golf parks in Ames?

Two parks in Ames: one by the Ames/ISU Ice Arena (where Gateway Pool used to be), and the other off of 13th Street by Frederiksen Court.

You can definitely find discs at the Sports Page in the mall; not sure of other places off the top of my head, and it has been a couple years since I've been in the area.

Each disc will cost you around $10-15; I actually just bought a starter set with decent quality brand-name discs for $25. Had just bummed discs from friends before that.

Two parks -- One at Gateway Hills Park near the ice arena (Carroll Marty DGC), and one across 13th from Freddy Court (Stable Run DGC). Carroll Marty is more scenic and has more elevation changes, while Stable Run is longer and is more of a competition-level course. They both have their place, but I'm partial to Carroll Marty myself.

You can get discs at the outdoor store on West Lincoln Way and Sports Page, for sure. WalMart probably has them as well. The cheapest ones at WM run around $7, and they get as expensive as $16 for the ones made of more durable plastic. You really only need three discs to start -- a driver, an approach disc, and a putter. You could even use something like an Aviar as a putt and approach disc and only use two discs.

The cheap discs are fine, and I'd recommend those until you find ones you like. Then if you wear them out, you can replace them with more expensive ones.

    Re: Disc golf driver

As for discs, Innova is the most common company out there. The Innova Leopard is a good beginner driver, and a lot of people like Innova Aviar for putt and approach. Get the regular version of those for $7 or $8 apiece, and you're ready to play. Most disc golf courses (including both Ames courses) are free.

If you're at a place that sells Discraft discs, the Cyclone is a pretty good all-around driver as well, plus it has the added advantage of being called Cyclone. :)

What kind of distance do you get? You'd probably get the best advice from people who throw about the same distance or maybe a little farther than you.

To add what others have said:
You can also get discs at Jax Outdoor Gear. Scheels in DM has a decent selection.
Sports Page in the mall might have the best selection in Ames, IMO.

I'm not really a fan of Discraft discs, but the Buzz is the best midrange I have ever used in my entire life.

One other starter set I saw was Innova Cheetah, Shark and Aviar @ REI for $23.

I'd like to spend less than $30 if you can't tell.

Both sets would be OK. I'd prefer the Discraft set myself. The APX putter is the only disc out of those 5 I don't have. Both drivers are decent beginner drivers, but I like the Cyclone better. I definitely prefer the Buzzz over the Shark, although the Shark might be a bit more beginner-friendly. Putters are completely a matter of personal preference, IMHO.

I may go ahead and order the Discraft set then, plus the driver is a Cyclone, has to be good.

    Thanks guys.
