    The Iowa State Logo.

    Hey everybody,
This is just my second post on this site, but I hope to make it a good one, and I am not totally inept as I have been ghosting on here for quite a while.
I've been thinking alot about where our uniforms are lacking, and it's not in the colors (other than navy), or the design of the jerseys, but in the logo itself. The Cy that is currently on our helmets is just too complicated, plain and simple. Think about it, all of the successful college football programs have a logo that that is simple, usually one color, and is easily remembered after being seen even once. Examples of these logos, to name a few, are the Texas longhorn logo, the K-State Powercat, the Nebraska "N", and the USC Trojan. Heck, even the squaks have distinctive and simple logo.
Iowa State's current logo is not very simple or very logo-ish, it looks like a cartoon. There is far too much text on it, and the punching Cy without text looks even more cartoonish. Even old school Cy is complicated and is hard to reproduce. We are presented with a unique problem in that we have two completely unrelated mascots, a cardinal and a cyclone, but we would still like to represent both in our logo.
Anyways, I got inspiration from what Kansas State did, when they replaced their cartoon cat with the Powercat, and I produced this logo, sorry for the shoddy artwork, but it was the best I could do.

I hope you like it, but please tell me what you think honestly!
Should I send it to Pollard?

Why not just go back to the chicken cy. I liked that logo.

As a design guy, I can honestly say you're headed in the right direction, but at it's current state, it's too busy to be considered simplified. The KSU, Iowa, USC, etc. logos work because their overall shape follows the contour of the helmet from the side, and this logo kind of goes against that with the wings sticking out.

I think the fix I would do is to eliminate the little head thing ... which pretty much makes it the cyclone logo of old ...

    Re: The Iowa State Logo.

    CyGuy,

Welcome to the forum! (belated, but still...)

I'm with you in that sometimes simplicity in a helmet design is the best. Even teams without a logo, i.e. Penn State and Notre Dame, have great, recognizable helmets. However, I think part of the problem we have is that a lot of the schools you mentioned (minus K-State) have a long tradition behind their helmet design. The Nebraska "N" has been around since 1970, OU since 1966, the Longhorn since 1960, Michigan since 1938, Penn St. since 1962, the list goes on...

I think personally, I just like our current logo. It's distinctly "ours" and it's up for most dominating mascot, which is really cool to me. While I see where you're trying to go with your design (and it's a hell of a lot better than anything I could do), at first glance it kind of looks like a Phoenix to me. But send it in to JP anyway, and let the people decide.

It's really not much different from Louisville or the Arizona Cardinals in how it contours on a helmet, in my opinion. It would have to be smaller on the helmet, probably roughly the size of Texas's logo.

I think you could be on to somthing, but at a distance it looks like something that I have seen tatooed onto a 21 year old hottie's lower back.

Bingo! That was my first impression as well. A solid effort, but maybe a little too abstract. Not real easy to identify what it is...

While I understand your sentiment about our current logo, it's been around for over 10 years now and has developed some brand recognition. It's a logo that can be taken seriously, even if it's a little cartoonish. I definitely agree that the logos with type don't work well and the punching cy logo would be a good solution to that issue.

Like others said, we need to develop a tradition with our logo and changing it every 10 years isn't the answer to that...

Inital impression -- I like it.

People can always tweak it a little bit but I'm very intrigued. Simplify it a little bit but keep it so that it can be identified from a long distance away and we have a real possibility.

    Re: The Iowa State Logo.

I've said this before and I may be in the minority here, but I love our current logos. I'm sure a lot of that is because it's what we had while I was a student.
I'm really not sure I would want to see them change.

    Re: The Iowa State Logo.

I found a simple 'twister' logo online which I need to clean up and yet lack the knowledge to do it. If anyone wants to take a look at it just let me know and I'll be more than happy to hand it over

    Re: The Iowa State Logo.

CyGuy#1, I like the concept a lot. I have attached a version of the image with a few suggested modifications. My version is very rough. I'm an unfrozen caveman when it comes to digital image creation and editing, so I just made the modifications very quickly in Microsoft Paint.

    My modifications:

    1) Moved the location of the head forward to align it more with the "body" of the cyclone.

    2) Made the eye bigger and moved it down, away from the top of the head.

    3) Added a few more "wind squigglies" toward the bottom to emphasize the cyclone element of the design.

    What do you think?
