Can Freddy help DG with his shooting?

I thought Fred had mentioned helping Corey Brewer with his shooting while being with the T-Wolves. This got me wondering if he could help DG become a better outside shooter. One of DG's weaknesses is his outside shot. Right now teams back off of him, practically daring him to shoot outside. Can Fred help make significant improvement in his Diante's shot?

I don't see why he wouldn't be able to.

Re: Can Freddy help DG with his shooting?

Corey Brewer's FG% went up 6% and his 3PT% went up about 25%......however his FT% dropped 16% since his rookie year.

I am sure he could give DG a few pointers

It certainly can't hurt...and if he can have an even decent 3pt shot, then he could be very good.

Guys.....DG shot 35.2% from the 3 point line last year. That's exactly the percent that Babb shot. He isn't nearly as bad of a shooter as you all think.

Of course, he can get better and I am sure he is working hard at it. But let's not pretend that he shot 10% or something like that.

If I remember correctly, he started out cold and his shooting got better as the year went on. It was painful to watch the Clones during conference play, but he was actually improving as the year went on.

DG's shooting worried me less as the year went on, but his early games still left me shaking my head when he would take that shot.

He'll be better, though. I'm confident that Hoiberg can get him there, and that he wants to get there.

Re: Can Freddy help DG with his shooting?

I could care less about his shooting percentage, which can be very misleading. I will be happy if he 1.) Doesn't turn the ball over (especially in critical situations), 2.) make good decisions (especially in critical situations), 3.) gets the ball to open teammates (on time!), 4.) did I mention don't turn the ball over?, and 5.) makes a big shot once in a while

I believe the answer to the OP question is yes, but it's not what I'm most concerned about

Re: Can Freddy help DG with his shooting?

DG is going to get it done this year. FH is going to put him in a situation that will take advantage of his strengths. My dad was on a plane to Chicago earlier this week and he sat next to FH and one the other coaches. My dad didn't know who it was. They may have been in Chicago for a Brackins workout. Anyway, the whole way there FH and the other coach worked on plays. They were even drawing plays on napkins. The name Diante came up non stop in their conversations. Sounds like Jamie's name came up a lot too. So it sounds like Diante will play a big role.

Re: Can Freddy help DG with his shooting?

How much are you really gonna improve in one season. He hasn't been a good shooter since he's been here so I don't know how he is all of a sudden gonna be great for his senior year just because Fred is the coach. It's not like he wasn't trying to improve on it when GMAC was here. Some people aren't great shooter's. It's pretty obvious his game is meant to be affective in other ways.

Re: Can Freddy help DG with his shooting?

The thing we need DG to do is hit the mid-range jumper. Anthing he does from three is a bonus.

As the season went on I noticed an emphasis on the mid-range aspect of his game. As in, instead of going to the hole everytime he would pullup. It was pretty effective from what I saw. I liked this progression and I look forward to seeing more of this. And hopefully with improved spacing, he will be more effective closer to the basket as well.

Re: Can Freddy help DG with his shooting?

Shooting is a learned skill. It can be coached. Look at Uconn historically and you will see that they have frequently had 3 point shooters that are hitting in the 40's. Recruiting is part of it, but it is a learned skill.

If you watch Stinson shoot a 3 in comparison to Hornacek or Freddie, the latter two would get in a shooting posture that has less chance of variation than if your elbows are out and loose, or your feet are not set. If your form is better you can get 5% better.

In the previous regime aside from Lucca who had it when he arrived, and also Scotty, other players did not seem to improve in that respect. I would say that since we have a coach that was a 2 guard whose forte' was shooting %, DG will very likely improve his %.

Re: Can Freddy help DG with his shooting?

A lot of guys are born with a great shot, it just comes natural. I'm willing to bet Hoiberg was one of those lucky ones, but I'm sure he knows how to work on improving a guy's shot as well.

I'm anxious to see how he does this year as our coach!
