    Transfer Process

Was reading the Recruiting Update on the front page and something caught my eye. When a player transfers, i.e. Chriss Babb, are they on scholarship immediately or do they have to pay while they sit out? The article mentions a financial aid package that he signed. Just curious.

Good question, I wondered the same thing when I saw the mention of the financial aid.

    Re: Transfer Process

I am not familiar enough with where our scholarships come from. I know some schools have separate funds, etc...so maybe that's the reason for completing aid request.

He's on scholarship right from the start. So beginning in the Fall 2010, he counts against the scholarship limit.

I think that he is on scholarship but I don't think he get's some of the other benefits other players get.

This. Should be just like any other player, except he can't play for a year.

Given he is counted as one of the 13 available, I assume he receives the same benefits as the other 12 on scholarship.

But when does his scholarship start? Summer or Fall? Is he on his own dime this summer? My guess is that his scholarship "starts" this summer like any freshman that chooses to attend summer school prior to his first year.

    Re: Transfer Process

Just heard an interesting tidbit on The Doug Gotlieb Show (1700 The Champ).
The 2 UW commits that jumped to Kentucky signed Grants in aid not LOIs.
The importance is if Calapari jumps to the NBA they can bolt without penalty.
Surprised more players don't take advantage of this loophole.

I wonder if they had to declare their signing bonus with Kentucky in their grant application. But seriously, the grant process isn't something that you complete in a week. ISU takes a couple of months to get grants approved. How did they first send the FAFSA to Kentucky and then have Kentucky process it already? This sounds fishy, but at least this is something that the NCAA can look into since it is all on record.

They signed a financial aid offer. No FAFSA. They are different animals.

When a kid signs just a financial aid offer, the school still must provide a year's athletic scholarship, but the recruit can back out and attend another school without NCAA penalty.

    Re: Transfer Process

Also something to note is that each student athlete is only allowed to sign one letter of intent in their careers. Since Chris signed one at Penn State, he would not be able to sign one at ISU, and it is not necessary as well.

I agree. I do not see why more top players do not do this.
