Detroit paper: why would Big 12 teams give up rivalries?

Good column in the Detroit Free Press where the author wonders if Big 12 fans really want to give up long-standing rivalries to join the Big Ten.

If the Big 10 takes Texas, that will be it.

Iowa State makes geographic and rivalry sense but doesn't bring much to the table except corn.
What the hell does Detroit offer us?

“One day we’ll be in here celebrating a Big 12 championship,” Rhoads said. “That I can promise you.”

"I hope to coach here until I retire," Hoiberg said.

They gave us Jack White. Better than any automobile that has ever come out of that city.

Re: Detroit paper: why would Big 12 teams give up rivalries?

for it to be a rivarly, both teams need to be competive over a long period of time. With that defination, Nebraska has no rivarly with Colorado, Kansas, etc. and the formation of the Big 12 ruined what was a good rivarly with Oklahoma.

Nebraska vs Iowa would make for a great rivarly, same for Wisconsin and the connections that Barry Alvarez (sp?) has to Nebraska.

By your definition: UNL's rivalry with CU or OU or even KSU > then UNL's rivalry with Wisconsin, Iowa or any Big 10 team.

I doubt Texas wants to play ALL their away games in freezing conditions.

They work hard enough trying to schedule the away games against Big 12 north teams as early as possible.

Do they want to play in Lubbock, TX in late november, or in Ann Arbor, MI?

Re: Detroit paper: why would Big 12 teams give up rivalries?

The better question is, why would Iowa quit playing ISU after Nebbie and Mizzou join the Big 4x4?

Simple: because ISU fans consider it a rivalry, and Iowa fans don't.
