    CPR in Hawkeye Territory

    TH - Local Sports Article

An enthusiastic local chapter of Cyclone Nation welcomed Rhoads and other ISU coaches and personalities at Eagle Point Park's Riverfront Pavilion. The Cyclone Tailgate Tour made its first stop in Dubuque, a traditional Hawkeye town that Rhoads says is more Cardinal and Gold than people realize.
"People say that it's Hawkeye Country, but it's Cyclone country, too," said Rhoads, speaking in a city where Iowa State lacks a radio affiliate. "People assume Eastern Iowa is just black and gold, but we get our largest and most enthusiastic receptions in eastern Iowa."

I grew up in Dbq and for the longest time I knew of one other Clone fan. Out of my class of 250+, maybe 10 of us went to ISU.

Few years back, I had to go to a bar to watch a game and was amazed how many ISU fans were there.

Great article. I was unaware that Dubuque did not have a Cyclone Radio Network affiliate. That needs to be changed.

Radio coverage for ISU in NE Iowa is absolutely pathetic. I can't pull in anything from Cedar Rapids so I don't know what there is down there, but New Hampton is the northeastern most station that carries the 'Clones and that station will carry no more than 45-60 miles in any direction. Cedar Falls and I think Mason City have AM stations that carry them so you're done after dark there. Hampton is another good one but there are just so many holes in the coverage up here.

540 AM is sadly usually the best you can do in large parts of NE Iowa.

When I was going to school in Davenport we were certainly the minority but we had a pretty decent size Cyclone fan base in the Quad Cities. If we would have to go to a bar to watch a game we were always sorrounded by a lot of Clones.

    Re: CPR in Hawkeye Territory

Fact is, over the last 10-15 years ISU's growth in area's that before that was non existant is nothing short of amazing. I grew up a hawk fan in SE Iowa in the 80's and early 90's. I barely even knew ISU existed growing up...seriously, not one friend or family member was a Cyclone fan.

Now, I moved back home from Ames a few years ago and am totally blown away going to school events and seeing all these kids wearing ISU gear...totally blown away. Iowa is still the big dog in town but there has been a huge shift in recent years no doubt.

i also live in NE iowa. Unfortunately, waldorf games sometimes get played during iowa state football games, so I have to listen to a radio station that just barely comes in.

the hawks are always on am 1300 which always comes in fine.

Doesn't KNEI in Waukon still cover the Cyclones? They did when I was growing up in NE Iowa.

They had them, dropped them, had them again, then dropped them again. I think the last time they carried the Clones was 2 or 3 years ago. The station manager in Waukon is a Hawkeye honk.....couldn't care less about ISU. During the last span when they were carrying ISU, they would constantly cutoff the football coverage as soon as the game was over so we got no postgame. The people who advertised for the games were ******.

I've tried to tell Pollard that he needs to make an effort to expand radio coverage, but he apparently feels that everyone has a laptop in their tractor/vehicle and radio is no longer needed.

Pollard was asked that exact question at the Tailgate Tour (on video at Cyclones.com) and he said that people need to work over the radio stations themselves. Programming is dependent on advertising that can be sold - if the radio station and advertisers know people will listen to the broadcast, money will be made and games will be aired. Pollard can't force them to air anything.

I go to school in north eastern Iowa, and my class is mostly Hawk fans, but you can see more and more Cyclone fans starting to come. Most of the Hawk fans don't know who there quarterback is.

    Re: CPR in Hawkeye Territory

There are more Hawks fans in that part of the state. Also, Hawk fans in general are better at voting with their wallet- a benefit of being so egotistical.

    Re: CPR in Hawkeye Territory

I like the effort by coach, but I also get sick of the stupid little bickering about who has more fans where. Iowa could hold a reception at the Holiday Inn in Ames and fill it up no problem. Our problem isn't getting 200 fans to a dinner reception. It's getting 50K to a football game in November who are also willing to send a little more money to Ames that's been tough. This year is the best chance we have of taking a step forward on that.
