Greetings! Sooner fan visiting Iowa for the first time!

Hey Cyclone fans. I'm a Sooner fan I thought the best place to get the answers to everything Iowa would be this site.

I'm going for a week long class in Des Moines (Johnston) that my workplace is sending me to next week. We are staying in Des Moines and going to Johnston for the class, but I'll have a lot of free time in the evening. I understand you Iowa State folks are Ames, but I figured many of you could live in Des Moines or once have.

Are there any cool things for me to check out? Historical stuff? Neat downtown areas? I'm a 26 year old male if that gives you any insight into what kinda stuff I might like.

Any great local places to eat that I must try out during my stay? You all got any casinos with poker tables?

Anyway, I'm open to any and all suggestions. I'm looking forward to my trip. I know when people think of going places, Iowa isn't on the top of a destination list - but I enjoy visiting places I have never been and I want to make sure I get to experience some things unique to Des Moines/Iowa and have a good time during my stay.

    Thanks.

Sorry, once you get the border you will be sent back. New immigration policy. No Sooners.

I am kidding, they will let you in.

Are you coming alone or with friends?

There is a casino and horse track in Altoona which is on the East side of Des Moines.

If you go out downtown, the two best bars are Hessen Haus and Royal Mile.

Bandit Burrito in Johnston has some of the best burritos around.

Stay away from the boot at Hessen Haus, too much beer. I am still recovering from a debacle there 2 years ago!

Poker tables at Prairie Meadows in Altoona. If you are a so so poker player I can invite a few guys to my place to play. :)

Pretty much everything you mentioned is here. I'd check out an ICubs game if there is one. If you are going to be staying down town you can check out some cool places like Bait Shop, Fong's, Court Ave brewing.

"Open to any and all suggestions"? Too easy, I suppose, so I'll just keep it here.

    Welcome to Des Moines.

There's Terrible's Casino south on I-35 @ Osceola. You might want to check out the Bass Pro Shop in Altoona. If you like parks check out Water Works Park.

First, Welcome to Iowa! I hope you have a great time.

Johnston is effectively Des Moines, northwest suburb.

While you are here, check out downtown. There are many nice places to get dinner or drinks.

Hessen Haus [ ] Des Moines' German Beer Hall | Drink from the boot and dance some polka! is a nice downtown German beer hall and restaurant. Court Avenue Brewing Company | Des Moines, Iowa or Raccoon River Brewing Company are good downtown brewpubs with very good food.

State Historical Society of Iowa always has interesting exhibits, with http://www.iowahistory.org/'s many shops, restaurants and bars.

If you like indy music, check out Vaudeville Mews - Downtown Des Moines, IA - Live music venue and Bar. If you want a nice little bar to get a drink, check out The Lift Home Page.

If you want to sample over a hundred micro-brews on tap, head to El Bait Shop - Restaurant & Bar - Des Moines, Iowa.

There are plenty of other options along Court District - Downtown Des Moines.

The Des Moines casino Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino is on the northeast corner of the city.

If there is any other thing of interest, post it here and I am sure you can find it in Des Moines.

There's a home Barnstormer's game (arena football) on the 21st. Those are pretty fun to go to, drink some beer and watch some football in the spring time!
Prairie Meadows casino, in Altoona, has poker tables (hold 'em) on the top floor.
