    Blood Pressure Help

Whenever I take a blood pressure test at a place where it matters, I get really nervous and it gets very high, when I am home and take it, it is fine.. Any tips on how to control this?

It's called White Coat Syndrome. Try closing your eyes and thinking about some place calming - wherever you would RATHER be other than a doctor's office. Seems to help me. :) Bring your blood pressure cuff with you to the doc office too - maybe you would feel better using your own equipment there?

    Re: Blood Pressure Help

i suffer as well. Get to the Dr early so you are not stressed. If first test is high wait until end of visit and do again. Mine will drop at least 20 on both ends.

Are the machine tests at various retail outlets reliable? Such as Walgreens, Hy Vee etc.

    Re: Blood Pressure Help

A lady at work has this. As gundycyclone mentioned, its White Coat Syndrome. Her doctor gave her some sort of monitor to wear that she wore for I believe it was 24 hours so they could see what her blood pressure was over the course of a normal day. That showed that she really did get nervous at the doctor as it was fine the rest of the day.

Try meditation. Seriously. It helps you to learn how to calm your mind, and your body will follow.

    Re: Blood Pressure Help

I've got it too. For some reason, I have improved to the point where I don't get nervous anymore going to my regular doctor, but I still have the problem somewhat when I see my cardiologists. I do find that getting to the appointment early helps alot, as driving (at least where I have to drive), is very stressful because of heavy traffic. A couple of years go, I was at the point that my BP would go so high that the electronic machine they use had to re-inflate.

Also, I stopped reading CF on my cell phone (particularly the Big 12 expansion threads) when waiting to see the doctor. That is probably worth about 20 points of BP elevation right there...

    Re: Blood Pressure Help

I usually look at a poster on the wall or something and just zone out while they are taking it...tends to work.

    Re: Blood Pressure Help

I thought I was the only one... Great to know all you are out there. Last time I went (first time at a doctor in 5 years or so) I freaked a bit when the cuff got all tight (it kind of hurts) and mine skyrocketed... Doctor took it 3 more times before he was satisfied... (freaked him out after the first result)

Bear down right before you take the test. It lowers blood pressure and heart rate. Basically act like you are having a bowel movement. It's called a vagul maneuver. You have two vagus nerves around your carotid that help control heart rate. Also massaging the carotids are suppose to help as well, but it's not recommended because you may have plaque build up that may end up breaking up in Carotid.
