    Cyclone Signee Kristen Hahn Honored

AMES, Iowa Iowa State signee Kristen Hahn has been selected as a first-team Gym Dandy by PrepVolleyball.com. Hahn, a defensive specialist, was one of 13 players selected to the first team. The players selected as Gym Dandies are primarily back row players that practice hard and play to help the team at all costs.

The Cedar Rapids, Iowa native signed with the Cyclones last fall after leading Kennedy High School to the state semifinals. In the state semifinal loss to Iowa City West, Hahn notched 50 digs.

She garnered Elite All-State honors for the second-straight year, racking up 628 digs as a senior.

Kristen is a great kid and I am proud to have her as a Cyclone! She was also quite a good basketball player, any chance she walks on or do the basketball and volleyball seasons conflict (never followed college volleyball)?

They do overlap quite a bit. Last season, the last volleyball match was the Regional Semifinal on Dec 11th. The first basketball exhibition was on Nov 2nd, and ISU's 10th game of the WBB season (including exhibitions) was on Dec 11th.

Another potential problem with her walking on...I remember back in the day football teams used to cheat by signing up extra players to track and wrestling scholarships. I think the NCAA responded to this by saying you must charge scholarships for multi-sport athletes to the higher-revenue sport. Is this rule still in place and, if so, does it also apply to women's athletics?

Thumbs up Re: Cyclone Signee Kristen Hahn Honored

I saw this girl play at City High when she was a junior and that match single-handedly changed my opinion of the libero position. Kristen Hahn simply dominated that match from the back row and I'm thrilled she's a Cyclone.

As a City High fan, I've seen quite a few future Division I Volleyball players pass thru, and none of them made the impression I left with after watching Kristen Hahn.

As a fun aside, my daughter came home yesterday and told me she'd read a recruiting letter ISU sent to the 8th Grade sister of UNI signee Britney Nelson. With all the club tournaments, I guess I shouldn't be surprised our staff is identifying them that young....

If all are agreeable, she could stay for a fifth year and play basketball like Stevie Johnson did in football.

I've never heard of that rule, but it could be true. In 02-03, Susan Sherman was a WBB walk-on who was also a thrower for T&F. I assume she was a scholarship player for T&F. However, WBB only had 11 scholarship players that season, so it wasn't an issue if WBB was charged the scholarship that season instead of T&F.

Yep. There's an order to where the multi-sport athlete is counted. (Rule 15.5.9 and Figure 15-3)

    1. Football
    2. Basketball
    3. Men's Hockey
    4. Women's Volleyball
    5. Men's Swimming/Men's Water Polo
    6. Everything else

So a person who competes in FB and Track is counted against FB's total. The stockpiling of FB players in other sports was the biggest reason for the rule, as noted in a previous post. Similarly, a BB/Track participant counts against BB.
